Activity day to celebrate Friern Barnet Library at heart of community
4:40pm Friday 14th October 2011
CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Friern Barnet Library are hosting an activities day tomorrow, to celebrate its importance in the community.
Barnet Council is considering plans to move the library into the artsdepot nearly two miles away, but residents are invited to show their support to keep it in Friern Barnet Road.
The event has been organised by members of Save Friern Barnet Library campaign, with celebrations planned to kick-start tomorrow at 2pm on the green in front of the library.
Families can get involved in apple bobbing, leaf tracing, poster competitions, fancy dress and arts and crafts.
Martin Russo, a member of the campaign said: “We want to show how much we love our library and show how important it is to our community. We want to show that it's more than a library, it is more than a community hub, it's a second home for many young and old from our diverse community, coming together to enjoy and value the services it offers us.”
A petition has been signed by more than 3,000 people who argue the closure would affect the most vulnerable people in the area as well as detriment hundreds of children’s literacy levels.
Mr Russo added: “Our party is not about politics, and it is not about a decent public service being closed and it is not about the cuts - For us, our library has a place in all our of hearts and we want to celebrate it.”
