The Cabinet said the library would close at 4pm but it closed at 1pm!
It is with great regret and sadness that our hope to keep our much loved library open was ignored tonight at a vote on the libraries strategy by the Cabinet of Barnet council.
And despite over a year of us speaking up loud and clear to keep it open, our voices fell on deaf ears and cabinet swiftly voted it through to close it.
Whilst emotions ran high as the closure of our library was closing earlier than anticipated. A number of people present and some local residents had planned a Sit In. One of them reports:
On the night after the Cabinet voted to close FBL, an action plan was drawn. We knew that the Council would close the library before 4pm (as they did with Church Farmhouse Museum, and in Brent libraries to avoid protests). Therefore it was agreed by some residents that the campaign should make as much noise as possible, and so the 'Friern 16' decided to stage a 5 hour sit-in which commenced at 13:00, with the community supporting later at the 3pm meet up.
The main aim of this event was to send a powerful message of the disgrace of our Tory-led Barnet Council, and with constant Twitter updates from the insiders, press releases being written and the support of our community, we were able to succeed.
