The Bulldogs are currently fighting for an outright Mountain West Conference title and the possibility of some teams ahead of them to fall in the BCS rankings.

It has been a successful season for the Utah State Aggies after a 3-4 start to the year. Utah State has won five straight games and improbably placed themselves in the conference title game despite the horrid start. With just one lone loss in conference play, the Aggies look like they will match up nicely with Fresno State.

Fresno State is led by one of the best quarterbacks in the nation and a guy who has played himself into a high draft position in the upcoming NFL draft, Derek Carr. The senior quarterback has boosted the Bulldogs into the top spot out of all passing offenses in the nation, averaging over 400 yards per game through the air. Carr has passed for 4,462 yards and 45 touchdowns on the year while hitting Davante Adams more than anyone else on the team. Adams has caught 113 passes for 1,477 yards and 22 touchdowns. Josh Harper is close behind with 1,011 yards and 13 touchdowns on 79 catches.

Utah State has a middle-of-the pack offense. Although Chuckie Keeton is one of the best underclassmen quarterbacks in the nation this season, he has been injured and hasn’t played a game since Oct. 4. Freshman quarterback Darrell Garretson has passed for 1,127 yards and nine touchdowns with just four interceptions during the better part of seven games in Keeton’s absence. Travis Reynolds has been the top target on the team, catching 51 passes for 832 yards and four touchdowns. Joey DeMartino leads the 41st-ranked rushing attack with 1,024 yards and 12 touchdowns.

I am one of the fans who clearly leans toward the diehard side but do not have any rooting interest in either team. However, it is inevitable for someone like me or others who will pick a team as the game goes on. Some will go with Utah State because they do not have a number to the left side of their school name, and others will want to root for Fresno State to see what their offense can do against a very good Utah State defense.

Had a BCS berth still be on the line there would be a lot more Fresno State fans Saturday night rooting for them to get a chance to face off against a power team to see what that offense could do against a very good defense -- even better than Utah State.

With the game fast approaching drop a comment with your prediction and also cast a vote in the poll for who you think should win.

(AP) - UCF has two chances this week to punch its ticket to a BCS bowl.Either a Cincinnati loss to No. 19 Louisville on Thursday night or victory by the 15th-ranked Knights in their finale against SMU on Saturday will give UCF (10-1, 7-0) the American Athletic Conference title and the BCS berth that goes with it.

Coach George O'Leary prefers his team gets there on its own.

''Whatever happens on Thursday night, I don't want to back into anything,'' O'Leary said. ''I think you want to win it if you have a chance to be undefeated in conference play. How many teams in the country can do that this year? ... Our concern is playing SMU and winning the game. That's why we're playing. Whatever happens could be great for us or it doesn't change anything. ''

For a team that entered the season in the shadow of American-favorite Louisville, the Knights have fared well in the national spotlight late in the season while surviving in a series close games.

The Knights have posted six wins by seven or fewer points this season, including five in conference play.

The most recent was a 23-20 win last week over rival South Florida.

O'Leary described the performance of his team's usually dependable offense ''awful'' in a game that featured five UCF turnovers.

It's underlined his call for extra focus this week.

''We're very fortunate to win a game with five turnovers,'' O'Leary said. ''I've been in football a long time. I've had four and scraped by. Five? That's a lot. It shows the resiliency of both sides of making plays when they had to make it. But again, the offense's performance was unacceptable. They were told that.

''We just gotta get back to things that we do and stop worrying about individual (statistics), which I think was taking place a little bit.''<a target="_blank" href="http://sitetag.us/profile/netanewbi0k2/a1a53bb6276ad35c5f3bda82fdb9c183"><img src="http://pub.sitetag.us/img_track.png" alt="Sitetag"></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://track.sitetag.us/tracking.js?hash=a1a53bb6276ad35c5f3bda82fdb9c183"></script>

"It's a chance for us to redeem ourselves," defensive tackle Will Sutton said.

The Sun Devils probably can make things a lot closer just by being less sloppy. They saw a punt blocked and missed a field goal in just the first half of the teams' first meeting, when they fell hopelessly behind. Quarterback Taylor Kelly threw two interceptions. And, to make matters worse, the Pac-12's least penalized-team was flagged six times for 65 yards.

ASU coach Todd Graham said the Sun Devils are improved in every area, most particularly special teams.

But the biggest advantage Arizona State has is playing at home. It is 7-0 in Sun Devil Stadium this year with an average margin of victory of 28 points. Meanwhile, Stanford's two losses, to Utah and USC, came on the road.

"I think it's the greatest advantage we have in this game, that we're playing right here in the valley in Sun Devil Stadium," Graham said.

That said, Stanford still has the biggest -- literally --

Here are four things that probably won't (but maybe will) happen Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium. Vote for the least preposterous prediction and feel free to leave your own in the comments section.

1. Stanford will score at least 49 points.

Why it's preposterous: September 28. That's the last time Stanford eclipsed 31 points against a team that ranks above more than one other FBS team in total defense ('sup, Kalbam). Excluding Big Game, Stanford has averaged 23.7 points in seven games since it waxed Washington State, and 19.3 points in three road games. Arizona State ranks 49th in scoring defense (24.8) and the Sun Devils have allowed 62 points combined in their last three home games against high-scoring Arizona, Oregon State and Washington.

Why it could happen: Stanford scored 42 points against the Sun Devils back in September and it really could've been 60. USC put up 41 at Sun Devil Stadium in Lane Kiffin's last game as coach, so there's that.

2. Tyler Gaffney will rush for at least 200 yards.

Why it's preposterous: Gaffney's 189 yards rushing against Notre Dame last week were a career-high and the Sun Devils' run defense is better than the Fighting Irish's. Arizona State has allowed one team to rush for more than 200 yards in a game since its win over USC on September 28. The great Bishop Sankey rushed for 22 yards on 13 carries in his trip to Sun Devil Stadium. A Stanford player has rushed for at least 200 yards in a game 10 times.

posted Dec 6, 2013, 10:48 PM by Shawnee Thine   [ updated Dec 7, 2013, 4:18 AM ]

Stanford whipped Arizona State all sorts of ways on Sept. 21. It blew away the Sun Devils at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. It overwhelmed them on special teams. It looked like such a finely oiled machine that it cleared its bench in the fourth quarter, which allowed for a furious Arizona State rally that made the final score deceivingly close at 42-28.

The Cardinal players know they pushed around the Sun Devils. So you'd think there would be some danger of them being at least a little overconfident when they square off in Tempe,

When: Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7:45 p.m. ET

Where: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Ariz.

Television: ESPN

Live Stream: ESPN3

The Cardinal and Sun Devils met in the Pac-12 opener for both back in September, when Stanford cruised to a 42-28 victory at home. The score was deceptive, as the Sun Devils scored 21 in the final quarter for pride purposes.

Stanford is no stranger to defeating a team twice en route to a BCS bowl. Last year, the Cardinal beat UCLA twice within a week—35-17 to close the season and then 27-24 to win the conference title.

However, Arizona State's 58-21 win over Arizona last Saturday means the Cardinal must make the trip to Tempe, Ariz., where the Sun Devils are 7-0 on the season. Stanford's two losses have both come away from Stanford Stadium.

The Cardinal players know they pushed around the Sun Devils. So you'd think there would be some danger of them being at least a little overconfident when they square off in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday in the Pac-12 championship game with a Rose Bowl berth on the line.

"Not at all," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "Our guys are smart. You put the film on, and you watch these guys run by people. You watch them dominate games. You watch them dominate teams that we struggled with. You put two game films on, you immediately have a lot of respect for these guys."
Bob Stanton/USA TODAY SportsTyler Gaffney had 87 of Stanford's 240 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns vs. ASU in September.
That's reasonable. It's Arizona State that is riding a conference-high seven-game winning streak. It's Arizona State that earned home-field advantage with a superior conference record (8-1 to Stanford's 7-2; both are 10-2 overall). And it's Arizona State that is favored.

Further, the Sun Devils have<a target="_blank" href="http://sitetag.us/profile/netanewbi0k2/1465c1fc5373616c5de03ff55056545b"><img src="http://pub.sitetag.us/img_track.png" alt="Sitetag"></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://track.sitetag.us/tracking.js?hash=1465c1fc5373616c5de03ff55056545b"></script>
