Umpire Update

posted Jun 19, 2017, 1:43 PM by Saskatoon Blue Jays
I just wanted to send an update regarding umpires to our baseball community.  As many of you know we are experiencing a shortage of available umpires for games this season.  This is frustrating for everyone – players, coaches, parents, our league and also the umpire association.  We all want to have umpires available for all games no matter what level.

We have seen dramatic growth in the numbers of players in the past couple of years but have not had seen a corresponding growth in the number of umpires.  In order to umpire a game a clinic must be completed before the start of the season.  Our clinics are offered in the spring before the season starts so that umpires are available for games on opening day.

For this season we will have to make do with the umpires that we have.   No further clinics are offered as the teachers are busy umpiring baseball games.

What can you do to help this situation in the future?  The answer is simple – get signed up for a clinic next spring whether you are a player or a parent and then get out and umpire some games.  Clinics only take one day of your time and the cost is covered by your zones.

On behalf of the Saskatoon Baseball Council (SBCI) and the Umpires Association we appreciate your understanding of this situation.  Remember that both organizations are run by volunteers and we need your help to make baseball better.
