Thinking About Umpiring?

posted Feb 5, 2018, 7:04 PM by Saskatoon Blue Jays
Hello Everyone,

Some information for you as the baseball season is just around the corner.

On the great news side, our sport is growing in Saskatoon with more players and teams signing up.  From 2015 to 2017 we grew from 1,000 players to almost 1,700!

With the growth come challenges, one of which is the number of qualified umpires.  If you were a player, coach or parent last year you would have noticed the impact of umpire shortages:

·       Postponed or cancelled games when no umpires available

·       Parents put into situations to umpire without appropriate training

·       30% of our games were negatively impacted by the shortage

We need your help to change this trend.  No matter your skill level we can train you to be a qualified umpire and help as we grow baseball in Saskatoon and our Province.

You might ask, what are the benefits of becoming an umpire?

1.       Improve your knowledge of baseball and apply it to your game.

2.       Build meaningful relationships that can expand throughout the province and even Canada.

3.       Make your own schedule!

4.       Being an official can look great on a resume.

5.       Develop skills that are transferable to sport, work and play.

6.       Give back to baseball in a meaningful way.

7.       Opportunities to travel - stick with it and you could experience amazing opportunities throughout Saskatchewan & Canada!

8.       And finally perhaps the most obvious – you can make a quick buck while having the 'best seat' in the game.
