Eli majored in Environmental Engineering at Universidad La Salle in Mexico City. Afterwards she went to pursue a PhD at the University of California in Merced in Michael Beman’s lab. Her research project focused on the environmental seasonal dynamics of high-elevations lakes and aimed to understand how temperature increases, changes in nutrient concentrations, and organic matter inputs influence methane cycling. She also investigated the “methane paradox” in the surface water of Yosemite Lakes and identified a new potential microbial pathway of methane production under oxic conditions. At the Jackrel Lab she will be investigating the carbon cycling and microbial ecology dynamics involved in leaf litter decomposition of river ecosystems.
