The Avarice

The Avarice

An old woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone near a stream. Assuming its market value, she kept it in her bag and went on walking.

The next day she met another young traveler who was hungry and asked her for help and the old woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and requested the woman if she can give it to him and also told her that he was penniless and if it could help him for next one day’s arrangement for food. He also added that since the lady is old, it might not be secured to keep this stone with her. Smiling, she did so without hesitation.

The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him full economic security for a lifetime. He could do, eat, and buy many things he wished to. He was intensely happy as he would soon become a rich man of his town within a couple of days.

But, the next day only, he came back to return the stone to the woman. "I've been thinking," he said. "I know how valuable this stone is, but I have come to give it back to you in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. I don’t need this any more. You can do anything you wish to do with it.  Give me what you have more with you that enabled you to give me this stone unhesitatingly."

While keeping the stone back to her bag, the wise old woman smiled at the young chap and said,” Yes, I have some thing more precious with me than the stone which enhanced my  selfishness to give you the stone spontaneously .”

“Yes, that’s what I want from you. Will you give it to me right now?”

“Sure. Come to me closer.”

With utter excitement, the young man drew nearer to the lady with a thousand of dreams and planning that he had prepared within himself to do after he receives the thing which is more valuable than the stone.

The old lady hugged the chap and blessed him whole heartedly.” A mother possesses the power of blessing which has separated her from all others on earth. Go ahead and become successful with your hard work and intelligence. May God bless you, my child.” And she went away on her way.

Dumbstruck at this sudden bewilderment and for the shame for his greed, the face of this poor old chap turned white and pale as a blank sheet.
