Advice from Community

For casual use, many recommend Tigo stick. You can take advantage of Triple days to transfer your primary credit to your modem, and use the bonus credit on your phone for calls (not text). The plans are increasingly economical as you buy a larger monthly package.

After trying 3 or 4 different sticks, I've had the best luck with the Claro 4g sticks (black in color) at the lake as well as in Guatemala City and Antigua. They have 3.5g towers at the lake, so speeds are around 4-5MBPS down and 1.5-2MBPS up, with very little slowdown during peak usage (7-10am, 5-8pm). Prices are pretty cheap, but don't use them for downloading music/movies/torrents as you'll rip through the usage caps quickly.I carry a powered USB cable to run the modem to a window or better service location if I'm inside. The longest powered cable you can run is 5m for USB 2.0 and 3m for USB 3.0 (reco:Stephen Sper)

Tripp Lite USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Active Extension Repeater Cable, available in 5, 10, and 20 meter lengths works well for the cell phone dongles. It has an amplifier in the cable that runs off the USB computer supplied voltage to compensate for the signal drop over these longer runs. Make sure you get a USB type A with a male at one end and female at the other. Amazon has it. Out the window and across the porch... away! (link for the 5 meter) seem to be rather durable in my experience (rec Keith Wilson)

Idea Connection Italian Bakery WIFI is especially recommended in gringo alley, with documentaries & movies.
