Still  Life With Sister
(for my sister, the artist Cheryl Long)

We all remember in the evening

that April 24 how the opaque

yellow bulk of the West was smeared

its length with light –

as if my sister had drawn her watercolor

brush along its edge, painting

luminous apple green

north to south

then a primrose gild

wash that was the sea.

Within that breath of color

crescent moon emerged,

a curve her brush

had skipped to let white gouache

shine through.

She left a fleck of light for Venus, too,

forgot the rest,

wandered away
 into blue-green

tumbled-glass-gold sky.

Saw Us in a Painting uses six visual symbols from the cover watercolor, “Magical Healing,” by my sister, the artist Cheryl Long, as organizing principles for the book as a whole, composed as six, year-long cycles. For example, because my face was injured as a child when I fell on a log-splitting saw and repaired through the miracle of laser surgery when I was 38, I have long called myself '"Butterfly Woman."
I used this opening section to introduce myself with such poems as "Invocation" and "Night Rider," and "I Am Myself So Changed.’"
