Privacy, 802.11k/v, NDJSON, SDR2, MLS, Secure Boot
Privacy discussions lead to interesting conclusion in larger privacy group. Basically all pro privacy projects come from EU and are hosted in EU.
802.11k/v - It seems that some Wi-Fi networks require a dedicated hardware or software controller to remain active. The controller software cannot be limited to configuration time; it must run constantly because specific functionalities are delegated to it rather than being handled directly by the base stations. Researched platforms: [Omada, Unifi, AiMesh, Deco], kw: WiFi, WLAN, Networking
Matrix - Once again, broken clients, extremely bad UX, interoperation issues, security issues. Total nightmare for experts. No wonder any normie user would run away screaming. Because well, it's just insanely bad. Client issues, server issues, metadata issues, encryption issues, usability issues and compatibility issues. It's not like it would be one thing, but when you sum all of those up, it's quite annoying situation.
Matrix, Cinny, Firefox, Android - BOOM - I’ve been running into some persistent input issues lately while using Cinny on Firefox for Android. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure where the fault lies, but I suspect it’s tied to Cinny’s "command highlighting" or a similar text-processing feature. The symptoms are classic but infuriating: the cursor jumps sporadically, words get garbled, and the first word in the input box is frequently duplicated. I’ve encountered this exact behavior in a few other web apps as well, which leads me to believe it’s a bug in a specific version of a popular UI library.Ultimately, it’s a breakdown in the "holy trinity" of mobile web apps: the browser engine, the Android keyboard (IME), and the application’s own state management. When all three try to be too clever with text manipulation at the same time, you end up with a fundamental failure of the simplest task possible, typing a message.
NDJSON - I didn't know it has a name. Yet I've used it countless times, when you've just got large set of JSON objects, it doesn't make any sense to put those into one JSON object to slow everything down and waste resources. - That's so obvious that, well it is, just like CSV.
SDR² (Software-Defined Rydberg Receiver) - Nice — even radio tech keeps getting better, now with MIMO support. The most interesting developments are still ahead, as both the receiver and transmitter sides are rapidly gaining capability. kw: Rydberg atomic antenna arrays (RAQ-MIMO), Spatio-Temporal Multiplexing (STM), Resonant Tunneling Diodes (RTDs), Silicon-on-Chip Phased Arrays, Nanocrystalline Magnetic Cores
Firefox - So, the new Firefoxes come with all these "features" and now my tabs have started freezing up. Just a moment ago, Firefox didn’t exactly crash... But the entire control/UI thread locked up, forcing me to kill the process and restart after a few minutes. It worked fine for a long time without these "improvements" but I guess someone thought it was time for some "enhancements".
More bugs, Cinny (Matrix Client) edit message doesn't trigger refresh / update to clients. If I post "A" and edit the message to "B" and send the update... It'll be only shown, when I post a NEW message to a room or switch to another room (view) and come back. Classic. So, you don't know if the recipient sees the same you see. You posted "A" 10 minutes ago, you edited it to "B" 9 minutes ago. It still might be that the user is seeing message "A" right now on their screen. - Tadaa, ultimate UX once again. How many bugs you can fit into a small program.
MLS - Long discussion Poberezkin vs Soatok - Yeah. I took my popcorn out. As I've said so many times, there's no single best solution, all solutions got pros and cons. And the classic claim of needing strong e2ee in large human group is also classic dilemma. So I'm gonna tell my darkest secrets to "only" 5000 people whom I don't know who they are. - Uuh, right? - Therefore I need proper encryption. - Right? kw: TreeKEM, RFC 9420
Bugs - Sometimes programs are so buggy that I really wonder if anyone is using them at all. They should have found these silly bugs already, and they wouldn't even be hard to fix if anyone cared.
Secure Boot - Endless discussion about UEFI/BIOS/CSM etc... So pointless, so much time wasted... SIGH!!! - Only interesting part of this discussion was to figure out that basically no-one ever uses their own UEFI keys. And secondary realization was, that you can use RUST to compile .efi binaries. Which is actually quite interesting point. As example, secure chat platform, could run directly at UEFI level, avoiding all the security issues that standard operating system might be creating... - Hmm?
