The 14th quarterly Salt Lake GIS Users Group (SLUG) meeting was held on November 7th, 2012, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Activities Barn at Wheeler Farm in Murray. There were about 110 in attendance. Olympus Aerial Surveys sponsored the lunch for this meeting.
Business
Deidre Beck, SLUG Board
Thanks to Salt Lake County Parks for the use of the facility, and to Olympus Aerial Surveys for sponsoring the lunch.
The presentations at today’s meeting by SL County Surveyors are the result of the recent survey where we asked SLUG members which of the SL County departments that they would like more information from.
The next SLUG meeting will be held February 13, 2013 at the U of U Digit lab. Details to follow; please mark this on your calendars.
We are always in need of Presenters, Sponsors, and Venues. Please contact a SLUG Board member to volunteer.
Sponsors
Olympus Aerial Surveys didn't have a representative speak, but they asked us to enjoy the lunch and please consider them when looking for aerial photography projects.
Presentations
Mark Miller, SLCO Surveyors, Partnering for Success
Mark talked about the lessons learned from the recent partnership formed between SL County and the cities for acquiring the 2012 high-resolution aerials. He also explained how the Surveyor’s Office is acquiring several sets of historic aerials, including 1937, 1940, 1964, and 1985. They will make these available after processing is complete.
See Mark’s presentation materials (slide shows, etc) HERE.
Emily LaMunyon, SLCO Surveyors, Our Role as a Service Provider
Emily demonstrated methods they use to share their information and services to other County agencies and the public alike; including web mapping applications, GIS modeling, and good old paper maps.
See Emily’s presentation materials (slide shows, etc) HERE.
John Kennamer, SLCO Surveyors, The Surveyor's Role in GIS
John discussed the Surveyor's role in creating and providing GIS data, and how it can make both fields more efficient and usable. He also covered the intent of Recorder documents and when accuracies are important.
See John’s presentation materials (slide shows, etc) HERE.
Zack Beck, AGRC (Utah’s Automated Geographic Reference Center), The Future of Imagery at AGRC
Zack made a brief announcement and explanation about AGRC's plans to move away from Image Server. At 10.1 they plan to migrate all of the image services to raster mosaics available through ArcGIS Server. This will affect all users who currently have image services saved in their mxd's. He explained how they will need to access imagery in the future.
Kevin Bell, Salt Lake City, Steve Gourley, AGRC, BIG DATA: Calculating the solar potential for every square meter of Salt Lake County
A 32 core server with 100 GBs of RAM running at 80% capacity for 3 weeks was used to solve the solar potential for every square meter of Salt Lake County. This was done using a "variably buffered moving window" technique developed in‑house to chew through LiDAR data without introducing errors that would be inherent in a typical tiling solution. The resulting data is 24 billion data points. Uses include calculating solar electrical generation capacity per rooftop, and several other uses.
GIS Humor
Ray Montgomery, Sandy City
Ray showed 2 short videos (parts 1 and 2) from “The Googling” series. Please see our Geography Humor page where all the humor videos we have shown at SLUG meetings can be accessed.
To our presenters, sponsor, and our venue, “Thank you!” And thank you for your interest and support!
