John Henry "Harry" QUARTON

 QUARTON, John Henry "Harry"

November 22, 1922 -April 8, 2019

It is with heavy hearts as well as with love and gratitude for a long life well lived, that the family of LCol. J.H. "Harry" Quarton, (Ret) announces the death of their beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather at his home in Summerland, B.C. at the age of 96.

Harry was born on the family farm in Marshall, Saskatchewan to John and Lilian (Henry) Quarton. The family later moved to Lloydminster, Sask. He was predeceased by his first wife Patricia (Walters) in 1975; his three brothers, Gerry, Reg and Bill; and sons-in-law Willis Ritchie and Larry Banick.

Harry is survived by his loving and devoted wife May (Moore) of 43 years and his daughters Marlene Ritchie (Brett Morgan) of Abbotsford, Shelley Banick of Edmonton and Cheryl Quarton of Coquitlam. He was adored and admired by his grandchildren Brent (Theresa) Ritchie, Chris (Cynthia) Ritchie, Tyler (Laura) Banick, Torrey Banick (Rebecca Rogers) and Tamara Banick along with his seven great-grandchildren.

Harry joined the South Alberta Regiment (29th Arm'd Regt.) in 1940 at the age of 17 and went overseas as a technical Quarter Master Sergeant as part of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division. He became the youngest Sergeant Major in the Canadian Army at age 18. After serving in WWII he returned home in1946. Upon discharge from wartime service, Harry was employed by the Edmonton Journal.

He served as senior Aide-de-Camp to five lieutenant governors of Alberta for 22 years with dignity, devotion and loyalty. Harry's long and celebrated career took him around the world, both in wartime and peace, from battling on the beaches of Normandy to escorting members of the British Royal family. He was an accomplished citizen soldier serving 46 years in regular and reserve service. His family, his regiment, church, gardening, sailing, public service and his career fulfilled Harry's life. Soon after their retirement in 1988, Harry and May moved from Edmonton to Summerland, making it their home for the past 31 years.

A Celebration and Remembrance of Harry's life will take place Friday, May 31, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 10037-84 Avenue, Edmonton. Interment has taken place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Edmonton.

"I believe it is the duty of each individual to serve their country in some manner to forever remember the sacrifice that others paid to ensure freedom." Harry Quarton

May God care for you as you cared for us.

In the going down of the sun and, in the morning we will remember him.

Condolences may be directed to the family at thequartonsmail@gmail.com or at edmontonjournal.com

September 7, 2017

Members of the SALHRA I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Medicine Hat this Weekend.  Just to reiterate the events:

  1. Friday Night Meet and Greet-1800 at Patterson Armoury.  There will be some finger food.
  1. Association Annual General Meeting – Saturday at 0900 at Patterson Armoury in the conference room.  Documents consist of 7 files that start with "AGM 2017..." and are posted here: AGM Minutes
  1. Change of Command-Saturday at 1300 in front of City Hall.  Reception afterward in City Hall.  We call on all members of the old guard!!  We don’t care if you don’t have the Association blue blazer and tie, if you have a beret (or even if you don’t), please show up to stand with the Old Guard on the parade.  We celebrate our own service to The Regiment, and continue to support it, as it changes command.  All former members of The Regiment are welcome.
  1. Immediately after the reception, we will have the honour to welcome Honorary SAR Walter Cami from Eeklo, Belgium and the Mayor of Medicine Hat, His Worship Ted Clugston, for the unveiling of “The Soldier and the Girl”.   The replica of the original marble statue which stands as Eeklo’s War Memorial represents a dying soldier being lifted to heaven by a young girl.  It is based on a true story of a Belgian soldier and a 14-year old girl who lived on the same street in Eeklo in 1944.  They both died as a result of enemy fire within days of each other.  The art form will be presented to The City of Medicine Hat in recognition of the role played by The South Alberta Regiment in the liberation of Eeklo and Belgium during World War II.  It is hoped that this statue will serve to remind us of the sacrifices made by the peoples of both Canada and Belgium in the pursuit of freedom.

Thereafter, with a short walk, there will be the dedication of the Sherman tank similar to the one                 that Major (R) Danny McLeod used during the war.  Mrs. Sheila McLeod will be in attendance.

  1. All Ranks Dinner- Saturday at 1730 (Cocktails) at Patterson Armoury.
  1. The USI is hosting a dedication of the 175 Battalion monument on Sunday at 1000 hrs.

Members of The Association,

There is a lot of activity happening in the next 4 weeks and I wanted to send you some updates and some information.

Change of Command

Hopefully everyone who will be attending the change of command has made plans to be in Medicine Hat the weekend of September 8, 9, 10 and you have your hotels booked.  As a reminder, here is a link to the invitation that includes details of the Friday night meet and greet, the parade, and the dinner that evening and the monument dedication Sunday.  Please ensure that you RSVP to the details on the invitation link and also pay in advance.  There is a paypal link (which is the easiest thing to do!)

AGM

The AGM will be Saturday September 9th in the morning before the parade.  Details will come out for that soonest.  For those who won’t be in Medicine Hat we are arranging for a telephone bridge for people to call in.   You must be a member in good standing. For those who need to pay their dues in order to attend please go to the website at salhra.net and pay by paypal.  If you are financially able, I encourage people to pay the lifetime membership dues.  It means that you will never miss out, and it is less burdensome on your volunteer executive members who put a lot of hours in keeping things running.

EPCOR Riverfest

The Association has been asked to volunteer for the Edmonton EPCOR Rivervest https://epcorriverfest.ca/ and there is an honorarium paid for each volunteer hour provided.  We are looking to get at least 20 able-bodied people out for this event in Edmonton on September 16, 2017.  The funds raised will be donated for the construction of Light Horse Park which is still raising funds for its construction (total construction cost is around $500,000).  We are hoping to raise at least $2,500 just in the donation of people’s time (up to 8 hours per person).  We are looking for able bodied volunteers to help move rafts into the water.  LCol Troy Steele and I are volunteering and we are asking for any members of The Regiment and The Association to help out.  This will be a great fundraiser for this incredible monument dedicated to The Regiment and our veterans.  Volunteers can just email me at gyanda@shaw.ca.

That’s it for now. There are a lot of members of The Regiment, and our Association who have put in a lot of time these last months that are culminating over the next 4 weeks.  I thank them very much for all they are doing and hope you will all be able to participate in these important events.

Change of Command and Reunion 2017

July 2, 2017
CANADA DAY MESSAGE

Members and friends of the South Alberta Light Horse Regimental Association,

I write this to you on Sunday July 2, 2017, the day after spending an entire day in the sun (and a bit of rain) celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canada with my family.  I wanted to send greetings to you as we celebrate this very important event and reflect on what it means to me.  I’m just a regular person, just like all of you are.  I live in a community; I work at a job I enjoy; am raising a family and love many of the people around me deeply.  Just like all of you do.  We may all come different walks of life but one things truly binds us together within Canada.

We did our part.

We have those of our beloved veterans who did their part in previous conflicts Canada entered into.  From our veterans of World War I or our few remaining veterans from World War II to the newest generation who have seen conflict and know its profound effects; to those who have served The Regiment, and served Canadians, and have always known that the call may sometime come, either domestically or far away, to serve Canadian values and interests.  Or those in our Regimental family who have supported their loved ones away training and serving.  We have our Honorary members in Europe who have always helped and supported The Regiment and its memories with all their activities.

We did our part.

We helped make Canada what it is both individually and collectively.  I’m proud of my service and you should all be proud of yours in whatever capacity you have served.

Our next opportunity to get together is the weekend of September 9th in Medicine Hat for the Change of Command and reunion weekend.  Friday is a meet and greet.  Saturday is our AGM and the change of command and celebration dinner.  Electronic invitations will be going out very soon with details but I ask you to mark it on your personal calendar now and please plan to attend.  We can all celebrate our service and The Regiment together.

In any case, no matter where you are, I wish you all the most enjoyable Canada Day weekend.

Warmest regards,

Captain (Ret) Gregory Yanda, CD
President
The South Alberta Light Horse Regimental Association

March 30, 2017

Congratulations to Sgt (Ret.) Rob McCue who will be representing the Association in Europe at the 100th anniversary of the victory at Vimy. Sgt McCue joined The South Alberta Light Horse in 1991 as a young Trooper and he retired in 2012 at the rank of Sergeant.  He deployed to Bosnia in the late 90's and again to Afghanistan in 2006 where he served outside the wire.  He has a very personal connection to Vimy.  His grandfather worked his way from Gunner to the Battery Sgt Major of the 2 RCHA while in service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He joined in 1914 and served all through the war.  His battery conducted extensive Counter Battery fire on the Easter Morning of the Attack on Vimy.

Sgt Alva Robert McCue Regimental # 6135 was awarded with a Distinguished Conduct Medal from the Prince of Wales for "his coolness in handling his guns under Enemy Fire" as well as an incident where he withdrew wounded members of his battery in a horse drawn wagon while under enemy fire.

Sgt McCue still holds much of his grandfather’s memorabilia, including the handwritten orders that were given to his Grandfather to conduct Counter Battery Fire against the German guns prior to the assault on the ridge on Easter morning.  "Grandpa explained to me how they used ‘Sound & Time’ ranging to locate the German guns using trigonometry and how effective the Canadian Guns became at counter battery actions. He spent many occasions in the forward trenches with 3 or 4 pocket watches and his notebook, and he would listen and use his compass to discover and record German Artillery positions."

His Grandfather spoke to him about the barrage of fire that could be heard in London that preceded the assault on Vimy.  He also told him tales of the first time he saw a tank, when it broke through a bridge and stranded the Canadian Cavalry on the German side of the river. He spoke of Allied Flying Machines and the vicious gas attacks sent against the Canadian lines.

Rob will be traveling with the official Canadian delegation and will be in Ottawa prior to going to Europe for media interviews about his grandfathers story with Veterans Affairs Canada.  We wish him safe travels.

This is a general invite to everyone in the Edmonton region to get together for Friday night drinks at our Friday Night Social on January 13, 2016 any time after 4 pm.  We will have it at Jefferson Armouries Officers Mess.  Any member, their guests and anyone who is thinking about joining is welcome to come.  The International Order of Old Bastards (IOOB) has the mess open every Friday night and run $1 meat package and 50/50 cash draws.  It’s a good chance for our Association members to get together and to meet new people.

It is with sadness that we inform everyone that another dear friend of the South Albertas, Hon SAR Kees Becht of Bergen op Zoom, passed away on November 25th at the age of 99.  He was one of the longest serving Honorary SAR   For those who had an opportunity to meet Kees Becht, it was always a privilege, and always with a twinkle in his eye.  His family owned the brewery which was on the SAR liberation route into Bergen op Zoom.  During the war, Kees was a political prisoner in a German detention camp, and after the war, he was active in many community initiatives, including as Alderman and Deputy Mayor of Bergen op Zoom.
He always loved to tell the story that the Regiment destroyed his brewery and he couldn’t make up his mind as to whether he should send Swatty, Jr. a bill or thank him on behalf of Swatty, Sr. for liberating his city.  He also said he should charge the Regiment for all the beer they drank!

It is with sadness that we inform everyone that a dear friend of the South Albertas, Hon SAR Piet Hoedelmans of Bergen op Zoom, passed away on October 30th.  Piet mustered great strength to attend the Battlefield Tour dinner in August and was able to mix with the Regimental family and to see Swatty again. Our thoughts go out for him, his family and friends.
