Salcombe Estuary
The Salcombe and Kingsbridge estuary is without doubt, one of the most beautiful and developed sailing and leisure destinations in England. A yatchman's paradise, Salcombe is home to the Salcombe Yawl, a local shell fishing fleet, an array of leisure craft, large and small, an All-Weather Tyne Class Lifeboat and an Inshore Atlantic 75B class, that we are all very proud of. Salcombe has had a lifeboat stationed in the harbour since 1869.
The Harbour extends from the entrance, which is south of the famous bar, taking in Batson, South Pool, Frogmore, Blanksmill, Collapit and Bowcombe Creeks to Kindsbridge which is four miles from the open sea. The entire Estuary represents almost 2000 acres of tidal water, and is at the heart of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Estuary is also a marine Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a Local Nature Reserve. There are many guided walks, wildlife and special events in the area. With such a rich diversity of habitat's it is a great place for family holidays.
Many people enjoy the boating and beach life, including sailing, water skiing and fishing, but others enjoy exploring the shops, sampling the local food and beer. The scenery is magnificent, and the South West Coastal Path stretches east and west from Salcombe, much of it is on National Trust land. Pick up a map from Tourist Information which is in Courtenay Street. There are numerous pubs and restaurants nearby, and a very good local butcher, baker and greengrocer shop just down the road.
