St. Matthew Church News

Saint Matthew Parish 2017 Toy Drive:  As we prepare to celebrate the joyful Nativity of our Lord this Advent, Saint Matthew Knights of Columbus will be collecting new, unwrapped toys this Christmas season. The toys will be distributed to families in need by Catholic Charities. As in years past, the items can be for boys and girls up to age 14. Items will be collected the following weekends: December 2-3, and December 9-10. There will be a bin in the vestibule of the church. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.

Please join us for the Advent Penance Service that will be held on Saturday, December 16th at 10 a.m.  In the coming weeks, as there is much preparation for the special and holy day of Christmas, this is the most important thing to put on your to do list.  Please plan on joining us, and prepare your heart and direct your mind toward Christ this coming Advent by making a heartfelt confession.

RESOURCES FOR ADVENT - Prepare your heart and mind for Christ this Advent with resources available at www.HbgDiocese.org/advent  You will find daily suggestions for prayer, reflection, action and blessing that can be used during the Advent season. A list of Advent Penance Services along with Penance and Reconciliation resources are available.  Also find a list of the top 20 Christmas movies from Catholic News Service. The material is courtesy of Diocesan offices, the US Catholic Bishops and other fine Catholic institutions.

St. Matthew Statue – In May 2014 the bell tower was erected, and at that time, it was decided that a statue of our patron saint, Matthew, would eventually be placed directly beneath the bell.  After much research, we have found a statue that is beautiful as well as cost efficient.  The new St. Matthew statue is custom-made, hand-carved hunan white marble with a low shine polished surface finish.  It is 74” in height overall with the figure of St. Matthew being 70” and a base height of 4 inches.  The cost of the complete project (statue, delivery, installation) is approximately $14,100.  We have been saving donations that were in memory of parishioners who recently passed away.  In addition, a 50/50 raffle for the statue was held at the parish picnic.  These monies were used for the down payment of the statue.  The balance owed on the statue is $9,043.   Please prayerfully consider making a contribution toward this beautiful statue.  There are special envelopes in the narthex for this collection. Envelopes can be placed in the collection baskets.  Please make checks payable to St. Matthew Church.   St. Matthew, pray for us as we begin this new project!
