It's difficult to express how sad the lag in Diablo 3 single player makes me. Now I'm not talking about not being able to get into the game due to server loads. Yes that's ridiculous and shouldn't exist - but it will go away. The lag in single player on the other hand, is part of the game and will hang over our heads long after launch.
The comic was initially going to be a joke, then I remembered that this really isn't funny. In fact it might turn out to be a huge problem for PC gamers. You see Blizzard just sold millions of copies of Diablo 3 with what will be zero percent piracy in the first week or so. (Maybe longer depending on how complex the server back end is to fake) Now that sounds like a very appealing number to publishers. Which is a problem for us.
The most maddening part is that this is pure regression of player capabilities - I have a bunch of Diablo 2 characters on a CD from eleven years ago that I could play right now without logging in and without latency.
All they needed to do was give an opt out button that made offline characters. No access to stats, achievements, ladders, or the real money auction house, and no online play, locked to single player and Lan gaming. The money still would have flooded in.
