Jim Cyran Memorial Match

Our day started out with some of the crew arriving early (7:15 am or so) and the MD shortly after. Our morning started out overcast, humid, and drizzling some light rain. That bit of dampness quickly passed on by, leaving us to get after the task of getting all set up on range 6, which the SVFTC had not utilized for an FT match in what seems like 8–9 seasons. Though it was fitting to be on range #6 today, as it is where it all started 14 seasons ago when Jim & Scott started the Field Target club.

All our large montage pictures of the life and times of Mr. Jim Cyran were placed around our area; practice paper and the Quad target went out for the practice session. Then out came some early food, as Darren T's wife Julie had made up a large coffee cake and a batch of iced tea... Yum!!

Today, with the sketchy weather and forecast 5–10 mph winds, we kept the Troyer rating at about 27–28 in my estimate, and only 4 targets, as I recall, were 45 yards or greater. Though keeping with setting some small stinkers to challenge the best among us, we had plenty of doable, easier scoring shots to have a little something for all skill levels. 15 lanes and 60 shots with instructions pre-match to keep it moving along with a "let's try and all finish about the same time."

The crew did that with all score cards turned in within about a 10-minute window... excellent!!!

We finished up, shut down the range, and the crew quickly broke it all down inside 10 minutes and made stacks of gear in 2 piles for easy pickup!

Then... out comes the gear some had been holding back in their rigs as asked, and we had a SWAP MEET! Within about 10 minutes of that, we sent everyone down to get some lunch served up by Dawn S (Match Director's wife), where we had gourmet hot dogs and links w/ condiments... potato & macaroni salads, chips, drinks, and cupcakes too! Toward the end of the match, we had 2 shrimp cocktail plates come out, provided by Conrad R, having trays emptied by the time the match finished...yum yum tasty!

With everyone fed, all converged back up to the swap meet and storytelling area where deals got made, stories of a day's FT shooting shared, and some gear changed ownership. Not all gear sold, but such is a swap meet in general.

We got all the match gear back into the trucks as the event wound down. It was pretty dang cold and many did not dress correctly or have the gear they needed to be out in a humid and cool day in the low 50s. As to the wind? It stayed mostly behind us all morning with only a light left to right bias at times, but enough to move your pellet if not correcting. This is why some scored so close to cleaning it — the typical most experienced among us today.

Well, that wraps up an otherwise EXCELLENT day with 23 other buddies shooting Field Target. Memories of the club's co-founder surrounded us all day. Laughter and excellent sportsmanship were shared by all present & that is the biggest memory: that of 24 like-minded folks having FUN!!
