Hi team players.

Here are the remaining dates for your diary.  The key match for the 2nd team verses Aldermaston2 is 28th Feb, so please can we have everyone's support to get our strongest team out that evening.

2nd Team End of Winter 2017/18 Season Round Up

posted 17 Apr 2018, 15:26 by Charles Smith   [ updated 17 Apr 2018, 15:32 ]

In league Division 2 we didn't do quite enough to maintain our place and ended up second from bottom.  That puts in Division 3 for next Winter season : (

In the Shield completion we did well to get through to the plate final, hosted at Bounty 12th April, where we were up against Datchet2.  We had good wins at 1st and 5th strings by Geoff and Avon.  Ballsy and I didn't register any games and Vivek lost his tough match 3-2.  So we were runners up. Yey!  See attached photo.

Onward to the Summer season.

2nd Team 2017/18 Season Update

posted 2 Mar 2018, 06:49 by Charles Smith

Updated 02/03/18.

It's getting near to the end of season and the second team have some key matches to win.  Our objectives are to 1) Stay up in Div2 and; 2) Win the Shield Plate.

We have team matches on the next four Thursdays.

1. League Div2

We are currently second from bottom in the relegation zone with 103 points.  Next above us are Bracknell2 (121) and Herongate (125).  We need maximum points from our remaining 3 matches:

1st March - Away vs Bracknell2 (our closest rival for relegation) - Postponed to 29/03/18 due to snowy weather.
15th March - Home vs Aldermaston (they are bottom of the table)
22nd March - Away vs Nuffield (i really want to beat those guys!)

Bracknell2 and Herongate both have tough remaining games.  We can do it!

The First Team are currently top of Div1 and aiming for promotion to the Premier.  If Henry can get their best first team to play then that will help us to get the best second team out as well.

2. Shield Plate

We won the quarter final last week vs the Berkshire Ladies.
8th March - Semi-final away vs Caversham Park Village (they play in Div6)
12th April - Final vs the other semi-final winner.  Datchet2 (top of Div3) or Beechdown (in Div4).  Venue TBA.  It's usually played at Wellington.

1st Team 2017/18 season so far

posted 2 Mar 2018, 02:06 by Henry Withrington

Three matches to go until the culmination of the 2017/18 winter season, which could see the 1st team get promoted to the Premier Division for the first time in the club’s history!

With nine matches played and seven of those being victories, we are 10 points clear from 2nd place Wellington 2 and 36 points clear of 3rd place Hart. If we win 5-0 in our next game we are guaranteed promotion.

We managed to reach the semi-final of the Berkshire Cup but lost to a very game Wellington 1.

Below I have written player statistics of the course of this season:

Henry Withrington - Rank 1 – 9 matches played – 7 wins – 2 losses

Dan Jones – Rank 2 – 6 matches played – 2 wins – 4 losses

Ben Joyce – Rank 3 – 7 matches played – 4 wins – 3 losses

Alex Lane – Rank 4 – 5 matches played – 4 wins – 1 loss

Alex Ley – Rank 5 – 6 matches played – 6 wins – 0 losses

Dan Ford – Rank 6 – 8 matches played – 5 wins – 3 losses

Geoff Woodcock – Rank 7 – 9 matches played – 4 wins – 5 losses

Temple Wycombe vs University 1 (Thu 14 September 2017)

posted 26 Sep 2017, 08:33 by Henry Withrington

After winning Division 2, it was time to step up our game against the big boys in Division 1.

We started off our campaign against Temple Wycombe, who were looking to make their mark in the division with a win.

Myself and Dewi Banks were on first........my game was a quick and straightforward 3-0 win, the same cannot be said for Dewi! I can’t lie, it was a horrendous display of squash that not only frustrated me but the opposing team as well. With countless shots to the middle, floor, tins and appalling movement I was about to strangle him. One thing you cannot fault Dewi on is his will to win as he saved numerous match points to win the last two games 16-14! 2-0 to Uni!

Vivek had little trouble with his opponent as he proved to be too fast and strong storming to a decisive 3-0 win. Jonsey on the other struggled against an OAP in the form of Wade. Though Jonsey won in 4 games, I must say even losing one game is pretty embarrassing. Well it would be embarrassing if I dropped a game, but I guess our different mind sets is the reason I am number 1 and he is number 2!

To finish strong, we had the mighty Geoff to secure a 5-0 whitewash, this is in the bag right?! Well that is what you would say if you didn’t know Geoff.  In typical Geoff fashion, he ended making the match 10000000000 times more difficult for himself by repeatedly feeding his opponent, even by the 5th game! Geoff slumped to a 3-2 defeat which put a bit of a dampener on our evening. Cheers Geoff!

Food was shite, since we were being served burned chicken thighs with burnt rice, I guess the home team was a bit bitter about their loss……

This 4-1 win put us top of the table and gave us full of confidence going into our next game against Aldermaston.

Hart 1 versus University 1 (Thu 22 Jun 2017)

posted 7 Jul 2017, 02:04 by Henry Withrington

Yet again our 1st team was not able to make it, so our 2nd team stepped up against 2nd placed Hart.

Needless to say we got a 5-0 drubbing, so next time we need to make sure we field a stronger side. This leaves us bottom of the table and so we have to win the first match of the 2nd half of the season, or we can kiss div 1 goodbye!

Marlow 1 versus University 1 (Thu 08 Jun 2017)

posted 7 Jul 2017, 01:54 by Henry Withrington

Whilst myself and Fordy were off boozing in tenerife, we still managed to put out a strong team to challenge Marlow.

Despite the fact our top 3 players got spanked 3-0, the 2nd team members stepped up to the plate to claim valuable points for the league.

Mr Ed 'Newsnight' Hawkins polaxed his advisary 3-0, whilst the mighty Chuckie 'the barracuda' Smith punished their number 5 with a gruelling 5 setter.....typical barracuda!

Not the result we wanted but not the worst result we could have got! Bring on Hart!

University 1 vs Aldermaston 1 (Thu 25 May 2017)

posted 7 Jul 2017, 01:49 by Henry Withrington

After two disappointing losses, it was the youth of the Reading side that helped carry the old boys to victory against the always tricky Aldermaston.

I of course won and our two students scraped past their opponents 3-2, most notably our new recruit (Alex Lane) being 2-0 down and very hungover.

Was good to see Geoff back on court but still having issues with his movement, whereas Vivek a a bit of a nightmare.

Greenacre (Herongate) vs University 1 (Thu 11 May 2017)

posted 7 Jul 2017, 01:46 by Henry Withrington

A tight game throughout against a top premier league side, who annoyingly have not fielded this strength of team in any of the other matches!

Only myslef and Vivek got the wins, though VIv's was a lot more comfortable!

2 matches....1 losses! No worries lads, I am sure we can make ammends next game!

Beechdown v Uni2 26/05/17 (4-1 win)

posted 5 Jun 2017, 04:04 by Charles Smith   [ updated 5 Jun 2017, 04:09 ]

Match report by James Mathers.

The 2nd team had an excellent away match against Beechdown. A team we have lost to before.

1st up were our 4th and 5th string, Avon and James M respectively. Avon, who is "resting" at the moment, kindly volunteering to play, as we were short of numbers. Unfortunately for him, he may have been resting too much, and went down 0-3. James, who was yet to win a match in Team squash this year, came in with a mission. After narrowly loosing the first game, he came back strong to record a 3-1 win, hopefully the first of many. He likes to think he inspired the rest of his team to greater heights.

Next up was Mark - playing at no 1 and James B, playing at 3. Both matches were tight affairs, even if the scorelines don't reflect that. Mark played a patient and consistent match, especially on the big points, and came up a deserved 3-0 winner. James, after winning the first game, lost the 2nd, but came back nicely to win the third and fourth, play some delightful drops and boasts along the way, to win 3-1.

With all the pressure off him, Charles at no 2 managed to somehow still loose the 1st game, but as always, once the headband came on, he prevailed 3-1. The result made doubly good, as Charles lost to the same player on a previous visit to Beechdown. Revenge was, I'm sure, sweet.

The summer league always seems to suffer with a lack of players, so if you would like to play team squash, please contact Charles to be included on the match invites.
