Club News

This league runs to Sunday 6th November - the following league will end Sunday 15th January.

                                              League news

Welcome to 12 players joining and re-joining the league and with 7 dropping out, we have 57 players with a further 12 out injured or away.

This is one of the highest number of joiners in the last 10 years and means that, temporarily, there will be some leagues with eight players so apologies if you are not where you expected to be but it should all settle down by the following league.

In the last league, 127 games were played being  95% of games , with 46 players playing all their games and just 4 who did not which are impressive figures.

We welcome back two students and two ex- students but also say goodbye to Mike “ double-barrelled “ who managed, at last,  to find more gainful employment but unfortunately up in London . He has promised to make the occasional visit to club night. Mike, in his two and a bit years with the club has left an indelible impression, quickly moving up to Premier Division and being a regular player for the first Team and just as importantly a regular participant at Sunday club night where his friendly nature endeared himself to all. He will be missed and we wish him (and Rebecca) every success and happiness in the future

New League website

Hopefully, everyone has settled into the new leagues website and thanks for the many compliments received which have been passed on to Chris.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions regarding the content or layout, please let me know.

Rankings

In the usual way the following are the biggest increases in rankings in the last league;

Lefty Dan                    +150 points

Mark Elliott                 +142 points

Drew Goodchild           +103 points

Chris Colllins                +100 points

Joe Hill                       +100 points

Tim Widdows               + 93 points

Annual Club Knockout Competition

The knockout competition is now under way and the details are on the website -2016 Club Knockout Tournament- and the notice board. Thanks to Geoff for his assistance on the website.

The round of 16 has a 23rd October deadline so absolutely no excuses for not playing those matches in good time.!

Please let me have results as soon as played ( even if you write the results on the noticeboard sheets ) so that I can up-date the website .

Future competitions

We will be looking further at the possibility of playing a one day knockout tournament in the New Year ( on a Saturday or Sunday ) split into three grades – further details will follow in due course.

Also there is a possibility of playing a local squash club either a team based match or a competition to give those who would like to play competitive squash but have not played team squash the chance of competitive squash .

If you have any thoughts or comments on the above on other competitions, please let me know, hopefully with offers to help!

Annual RUSC fee  - prize draw

Thanks to everyone for paying their fees by the deadline and as a” thank you” there will be a draw at club night on the 2nd October for one club squash shirt and everyone in the club will be in the draw..

Club Shirts

With many recent new members, please advise if there is interest in obtaining a new order of club shirts which come in two colours electric blue/black or dark blue /light blue in sizes of S,M, L, XL and XXL. The cost is £17.50 per shirt.

You have probably seen other members wearing them. Let me know if you are interested ( minimum  6 in total – not per person!).

Team Matches

Both teams maintained their positions in the Berkshire Summer Leagues. The First team finished in 4th place in Division 2 against some tough opposition  and our Second team  finished in 3rd place in Division 3 which was a very creditable result following promotion the previous year.

In the winter leagues our two teams are in divisions 2A and 2B respectively and we will need a strong squad of players for the forthcoming matches. We have already welcomed three  new  players to the squad which is encouraging.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website.- the next home game is the 1sts on the 29th September .

Sunday Club Night

The times for club night ( every Sunday night ) are from 17.00 pm  to 19.40 .It is an opportunity to play other league players of all standards and also some non RUSC members, many from other clubs and some of a high standard. Numbers do vary and already we have given back two of the later courts so do give support to Club Night if it is to continue.

League and Club News- November 2018

Latest news is now showing on our Facebook page

League News - September 2018

posted 11 Sep 2018, 02:41 by Richard Porter   [ updated 13 Sep 2018, 09:34 ]

This league runs to Sunday 11th November and then the following league will end 6th January .

                                       League news

Welcome to 4 players joining the league and with  2 dropping out, we  have 49 players with a further 14 out injured or away.

In the last league, 104 games were played, being  93% of games , with 33 players playing all their games and 11 who did not with just  8 games not played. 59 games were played in the last two weeks.

Annual Knockout tournament

The draw for the annual club tournament will take place later this month ( last chance to let me know in next 7 days if you do NOT want to be included) and the first round deadline will be  the 21st October through to finals on Sunday 9th December. Details of the tournament will be on the website and, as usual,  there will be three tournaments with the league players split between A,B & C and for each there will be the main competition with the first round losers going to the plate competition.

Rankings

The following are the biggest increases in rankings in the last league :

Avon Seneviratne                 +163 points

James Mollard                     +145 points

Terry Giles                          +141 points

Mark Chatfield                    +138 points

Mark Elliott                         +126 points

Vinnie Russell                       +105 points

Annual RUSC fee and Club tee shirts

Thanks to all those who paid their fees on time.

The draw for the two club tee shirts has taken place at club night and the lucky winners were  Mark Priest and Josh Wells .

The first name drawn was actually Henry W but unanimously we decided that if Henry had been at club night he would have insisted that we should re-draw as he has hundreds of squash tee shirts already. His generosity was appreciated !

Also this year everyone who paid their fee will be able to collect from Geoff at The Racket Shop a free squash ball ( to be collected by the 30th September )

Club Polls

Thanks to all those who voted in the recent polls- the response  was 72%.

The results were:

Squash team eligibility

Votes were  17 for and 16 against  the proposal that for this Winter League only  and whilst the 1st team are in the Premier League one player may play for the team without having to play in the leagues. This will now be implemented.

Formation of committee

14 voted in favour of the proposal that it would be beneficial to form a committee and were prepared to stand on the committee and a further 8 voted in favour of a committee but were not prepared to serve on the committee! There were 11 votes against.

Further advices will follow regarding the actual formation of the committee. It is  similar to Brexit (hopefully not so painful) in that the idea of a committee has been agreed in principle and now it is just necessary to decide how this should be implemented. It might be that for those interested some brain storming sessions might be appropriate but if anyone has any ideas, they will be welcome.

The original suggestion was  a committee of 4-6 people meeting 4 times a year with, as appropriate, sub committees  on the more labour intensive subjects , like social events , competitions , coaching, club finances.

Team Matches

The Summer leagues have now concluded and the great news is that both teams won promotion. The 1st team from Division 2 to 1 and the 2nd team from Division 4 to 3. A tremendous effort by both teams.

No sooner has that league finished than the new Winter League starts on September 13th with the 1st team playing, for the first, in the Premier Division and the 2nd team in Division 3. The first home game is on the 13th for the 1st team.

Do come along to support and please ensure you make yourself available for selection as we will need our strongest teams this season.

Court Closures

Many of you will have noticed cracks on the front walls of Courts 2 & 3 and I am pleased to report that Sportspark have arranged for these to be repaired. The work will take place on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd October and these courts will not be available for these two days.

Annual RUSC fee

It is that time of year when the annual fees  of £15 are due ( payable before  the end of August) and therefore, please pay in the next few weeks to avoid unnecessary chasing.

The good news is that once again the fee has been maintained at £15 and not only that but as for the last two years there will be a draw for two club tee shirts for those who have paid their fee by the 2nd September.

Also this year everyone who has paid their fee by the due date will be able to collect from Geoff at The Racket Shop a free squash ball ( to be collected by the 30th September )

If not paid, you will not be included in the next league. Anyone who joined the leagues since 1st May 2018 has already “ paid” through to 2019.

Payment methods are as before: ( preferred method – Bank transfer  – as this costs the club nothing)

You can either post a cheque (payable to "RU Squash club") for £15 to Geoff  at the shop or make a transfer to the club account number 81092774 sort code 40 36 03 (please give it a reference of your surname and "league fee" so that it can be  tracked) and also now you can pay by credit card/paypal - see website > membership.

http://www.rusquash.org/leagues/membership

Finally, you can pay me cash at club night.

RU Squash Club,
The Racket Shop,
481, Northumberland Avenue
Reading
RG2 8EY

Part of the fee will go towards your England Squash membership (see www.englandsquash.com for details) and the rest towards website costs, competitions etc.

Team Matches

Both the 1s and 2nd teams  suffered defeats last Thursday and both have slipped to second position in their respective leagues following a good start by both teams in the winter league.

If your name is not already on the team roster, please let me , Henry or Geoff  know so you can be included.

Please make sure the team squad are available as we need our strongest teams  for some tough matches ahead.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website. The next home game is the 1st team on the 2nd August  and the 2nd team on the 16th August.

Walkovers ,cancellations ,lateness ,court fees, responses and injuries

Pleased to report a better league with only a few complaints about one or two players not responding.

However, for the benefit of the many recent joiners and possibly some of the existing players I have re-stated the position in respect of, firstly , players who do not turn up for a league game .   Most players would  automatically offer a walkover to their opponent in these circumstances and equally most opponents  try and re-arrange the game as they would rather play than take a walkover but as it gets towards the end of the league , this becomes increasingly difficult and thus walkovers are the only option.

Secondly, if anyone cancels a game, for whatever reason, then the onus is on them to re-arrange the game, if there is time, but otherwise the previous comments will equally apply.

Unfortunately, there are a few players who have a track record for late cancellations or not showing and this will be taken into account in deciding whether a walkover is appropriate.

If anyone turns up late for a game, the rules clearly provide for this situation whereby if the game is not finished then the late arrival loses the match, with the score dependent on the actual games played (see rules) .

Finally, despite all the reminders, there are still members who do not respond to requests for games which is not only annoying for those who make the effort to organise their games but is also discourteous . If you do not respond to requests for games then walkovers will be awarded   (saying you are unable to play without offering alternative dates is the same as no response ).

There is a facility on your profile to show if you are away and should be used if you are away during a league period .If you know you are going to be away for a longer period or going to be busy then please drop out of the league and return the following league to avoid inconveniencing players.

Walkovers can only be claimed by referring to me with all the relevant information.

If you do not play a game, please do not decide on a 2-2 result as that is not in the spirit of the leagues and is unfair on those who make every effort to play their games.

Finally, it is expected that the person who has booked the court be offered half the court rate applicable by the other player, especially if that player does not have VO2 max membership.

Walkovers ,cancellations ,lateness ,court fees, responses and injuries

Again problems this league with players not responding to emails or making contact for games.

Therefore, for the benefit of the many recent joiners and possibly some of the existing players I have re-stated the position in respect of, firstly , players who do not turn up for a league game .   Most players would  automatically offer a walkover to their opponent in these circumstances and equally most opponents  try and re-arrange the game as they would rather play than take a walkover but as it gets towards the end of the league , this becomes increasingly difficult and thus walkovers are the only option.

If you do not respond to requests for games then walkovers will be awarded ( saying you are unable to play without offering alternative dates is the same as no response ).

As mentioned above, Andras Pal is joining the leagues and would like to get involved in providing coaching for those interested. Andras is a Level 2 squash  ( and racketball ) coach with extensive experience working with various age groups with varying abilities . Andras plans to offer group and individual squash coaching for RUSC members at SportsPark.

Many of you will remember that Andras provided taster sessions at Sunday club night and it is intended to try these out again, hopefully starting in the next 4 weeks – details will be advised.

In the meantime, if anyone would like to talk to Andras about coaching now, then please contact him either by e-mail or phone : andras.squash@gmail.com / tel:0740-255-7654 9 or see details on his club profile page.

Welcome to 3 players joining / re-joining the league and with  2 dropping out, we  have 45 players with a further 15 out injured or away.

In the last league, 104 games were played , being  95% of games , with 33 players playing all their games and just 8 who did not with only 5 games not played. Interestingly still over 65 % of the games were played in the last two weeks and 45 % in the last week .

Rankings

The following are the biggest increases in rankings in the last league :

Josh Wells                       + 185 points

Olu Fakeye                       + 109 points

Ben Aldred                       +  91 points

James Mollard                 +  88  points

Tim Widdows                   +  88 points

Club Social

18 players took part in last week’s social squash tournament , comprising teams of three spread across all the divisions with some fiendish handicaps. Only two individuals , Dev and Jack Lines were undefeated in all three of their matches. After the squash most players adjourned for a welcome curry across the road. Thanks to Lorraine for organising the event which was enjoyed by all.

Team Matches

In the winter leagues the first team play in Division 1 and the second team in Division 2. Currently the First team remain in top position and with three matches to play (two at home on the 1st and 22nd March ) could win  promotion to the Premier Division for the first time ever with just one more win.

The Second team  won their last match but with three matches remaining ( next home game on 15th March) need two wins to avoid relegation .

Please make sure the team squad are available as we need our strongest teams  for the remaining fixtures.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website.

Walkovers ,cancellations ,lateness ,court fees, responses and injuries

Pleased to report that this has been a better league with few complaints.

If you do not respond to requests for games then walkovers will be awarded ( saying you are unable to play without offering alternative dates is the same as no response ).

There is a facility on your profile to show if you are away and should be used if you are away during a league period .If you know you are going to be away for a longer period then please drop out of the league and return the following league to avoid inconveniencing players.

Club squash shirts

The original design (in the two different colours) are still available and still at £17.50 each. The new range of tee shirts, as proudly worn by the teams, is available in a wide range of colours with the squash club logo printed thereon at a mere £10 each. Both shirts are now produced by Geoff at The Racket Shop. In the first instance, please let me know if you are interested.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website.

Walkovers ,cancellations ,lateness ,court fees, responses and injuries

This has again been a poor league with complaints across the divisions about players not responding to dates for matches. Please make an effort to respond and to be more pro- active in organising your games.

Sunday Club Night

There has been an increase in numbers attending and this should continue with the return of student club members but if you don’t support club night then inevitably the courts will be reduced ( we have already cut back from 7.40 onwards) and the next stage might be to reduce to two courts from , say 7.00pm.

League News- November 2017

posted 6 Nov 2017, 08:31 by Richard Porter

This league runs to Sunday 14th January and then the following leagues will end Sunday 25th February and 8th April respectively.

                                       League news

Welcome to 5 players joining and rejoining the league and with  3 dropping out, we have 56 players with a further 8 out injured or away.

We welcome back Dan Ford who took an 8 month break from squash to cycle up ( and down ) mountains and for the first time since March 2013 is back playing right handed, mainly !

As mentioned last time, the movements through the top divisions have been greater than usual but should result in competitive boxes and also reducing the divisions mainly back to seven players. Still have eight players in Divisions 2 & 3 which I will try to reduce down next league but again with more relegations than usual.

The students will be departing for their Christmas break 8th December and not returning till 8th January which means they will want to get their games in before they go, so please try and prioritise their games. This applies to Premier, Divisions  2 and 5.

In the last league, 126 games were played , being  90% of games , with 33 players playing all their games and 16 who did not with  13 games not played.

Rankings

The following are the biggest increases in rankings in the last league :

Alex Lane                       +122 points

Alex Pitt                        +101 points

James Ball                     + 99points

Ed Hawkins                     +98 points

Richard Porter               + 83 points

Clive Eeles                      +79 points

Annual Club Knockout Tournament

Good progress in the annual club tournament which has now reached the quarter final stages and the next deadline is the 26th November through to finals on Sunday 17th December. So just three weeks now to play your quarter final games.

Please ensure that results are sent to me (even if you write the result on the draw sheets which are on the notice board) so that the website draw can be kept up to date ( particularly as I am away from 14th November to 4th December ).

Annual RUSC fees

The draw for two club tee shirts took place at club night on the 24th September and the winners were Michelle Firrell and John Cronin who have now received their new shirts .Consolation prizes of two squash  balls were won by Richard Miall, Joe Hill and Sam Dumble

Point scoring – PAR or HiHO

You should have seen the results of the poll but,if not :

Overall response was from 36 people ( 63% of the total) .

Of the total, 14 voted in favour of change and 14 voted against change with 8 with no preference. In the vote for the preferred scoring system 17 voted for the existing HiHo  and 15 for PAR with a marginal preference for PAR to 15.

Finally, the overall vote for whether the same scoring should apply throughout the leagues was 23 in favour with 4 against and 5 “ no preference”.

In summary, therefore , there is no clear majority for a change  overall but equally  as nearly 39% wanted change, it seems appropriate that where two players agree to play PAR scoring to 15 then they can do so but the default position will remain HiHo. This will be introduced into the rules from the next league, starting 6th November.

Team Matches

In the winter leagues the first team play in Division 1 and the second team in Division 2. Currently the First team have played three matches and won 2, just maintaining their top position.

The Second team have lost all three games and are in last position but with plenty of games left to improve their position.

The next home game is on 9th November with the second team at home.

With the additional players in the leagues, hopefully, we should be fielding some strong teams over the coming months but always  need more volunteers for team matches so please make sure you are available if you want to play.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website.

Walkovers ,cancellations ,lateness ,court fees, responses and injuries

Unfortunately, there were several moans in the last league about lateness on court and also failure to reply to e-mails giving dates for games.

There is a facility on your profile to show if you are away and should be used if you are away during a league period .If you know you are going to be away for a longer period then please drop out of the league and return the following league to avoid inconveniencing players.

The rules for injuries are clearly stated under “ Rules “ - rule ix and cover both on court injuries and other injuries. If you are injured then you must be let me know when you are fit again and ready to return to the leagues. Walkovers can only be claimed by referring to me with all the relevant information.

If you do not play a game, please do not decide on a 2-2 result as that is not in the spirit of the leagues and is unfair on those who make every effort to play their games.

League news -September 2017

posted 18 Sep 2017, 04:35 by Richard Porter   [ updated 18 Sep 2017, 04:35 ]

This league runs to Sunday 5th November ( a seven week period ) and then the following leagues will end Sunday 7th January and 18th February

                                                                                    League news

Welcome to 10 players joining and rejoining the league and with just 1 dropping out, we have 54 players with a further 12 out injured or away.

Of those returning four are students and additionally we welcome back Dan Jones who has decided that Reading is much nicer than Singapore!

This has created pressures in the top leagues to accommodate the students who all think they should be in the Premier Division! Time will tell but in the meantime there is slightly more movement in the divisions and several of the boxes will have, temporarily, eight players which should adjust over the next league or so. Have tried to maintain level and competitive divisions as far as possible.

What this means for the next league, subject to numbers of new joiners, is that 4 will be relegated from Premier and three promoted from Div 1.Then in Div 1 four will be relegated to Div 2 and 2 promoted from Div 2 and so on down the leagues.

In the last league, 101 games were played , being  94% of games , with 32 players playing all their games and 10 who did not with just 8 games not played.

Rankings

The following are the biggest increases in rankings in the last league :

Richard Porter               +141 points

Charles Smith                +110 points

Avon Seneviratne           +107 points

Joe Hill                          +107 points

Sam Dumble                  +103 points

Joe Iles                         + 96 points

Annual Club Knockout Tournament

The draw for the annual club tournament has now been completed and the first round deadline is the 22nd October through to finals on Sunday 17th December. Details of the tournament are on the website and, as usual,  there will be three tournaments with the league players split between A,B & C and for each there will be the main competition with the first round losers going to the plate competition.

Please ensure that results are sent to me (even if you write the result on the draw sheets which are on the notice board)

Annual RUSC fees

Thanks to those who paid their annual fees promptly and there will be a draw for TWO club tee shirts at club night on the 24th September and all those who have paid  will be eligible.

Point scoring – PAR or HiHO

Berkshire Squash have introduced Point A Rally (PAR) scoring for team squash for the top three divisions up to 15 points in each game ( two points clear at 14-14) with the remaining divisions continuing on Hand in Hand out (HiHo) up to 9 points but with the option to play PAR if both players agree.

When this was last reviewed by Berkshire Squash we decided that we would review again when they changed to PAR scoring.

The suggestion is that, starting with the November league, we should change to PAR scoring for Premier, 1st and 2nd divisions and that we should play to 15 ( two points clear at 14-14) as it is thought that the 40  minute slot should be enough time to play a best of 5 match on that basis and thus less unfinished games.

For the remaining divisions, HiHo scoring would continue unless there was a strong demand to change to PAR scoring. The option would be there to play PAR to 15 if both players agreed.

Currently, all our team matches are now played PAR, the annual knockout competition is played PAR and Sunday club night is also played on a PAR basis.

Please let me have your views as to whether we should change to PAR and whether to 11 or 15 and if this should apply to the top three divisions initially with the option on the other divisions to play PAR if both players agree.

I will then confirm in due course, before the next league, if we are in agreement to change the scoring so please ensure your voice is heard.

Team Matches

At the end of the summer season, the first team were unfortunately relegated but the second team successfully maintained their position.

We now move onto the winter leagues where the first team play in Division 1 and the second team in Division 2. The first matches took place last week and the first team won 4-1 and the second team lost 4-1

The next home game is on 28th September with the first team at home.

With the additional players in the leagues, hopefully, we should be fielding some strong teams over the coming months but always  need more volunteers for team matches so please make sure you are available if you want to play.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website.

League News -May 2017

posted 10 May 2017, 01:11 by Richard Porter

This league runs to Sunday 10th June - the next league will end Sunday 22nd July and the following one 10th September.

As the students have now departed and we have smaller numbers in the divisions , there will be two  leagues with shorter timescales.

                                       League news

Welcome to  3 players rejoining the league and with 17 dropping out, we have 43 players with a further 23 out injured or away.

In the last league, 111 games were played , being  94% of games , with 36 players playing all their games and 11 who did not .

We say farewell to the students for the summer of whom, four will be returning in the autumn. We wish those who are leaving all the best in the future and thank them for their contribution to the leagues and to the teams. We also say farewell to Miles who in his short time at the club has made his mark ending up as No 2 in the leagues and a regular and successful player for the RUSC teams. Enjoy your travels.

Rankings

In the usual way the following are the biggest increases in rankings in the last league;

David Foster                  +155 points

Richard Porter               +110 points

James Ball                    +109 points

Mark Brandon                + 99 points

Tom McGill                    +  90 points

SquashLevels.com

League players will be familiar with our own rankings system and additionally many of the team players have their team matches incorporated into the “ squashlevels “ website This is a fairly new site which records the results of all the matches of every tournament and county-league match around the world.  All our Berkshire team matches are already automatically added to the site.  The benefit is that one can easily see one's world, country, county and club ranking . It is possible to add  league matches and currently we are exploring if we can arrange for league matches to be included on the squashlevels website.

It looks as if this can be done and will probably merely require us to update our club league profiles with the option to add 'gender' and 'date of birth.'  Then  future results will be sent to squashlevels automatically. Currently waiting to hear from Chris when we can “ go live “. Not everyone will want to be included and it will be simple enough to opt out.The website details are as below, if you would like to find out more

Team Matches

At the end of the Berkshire Winter Leagues, the First team won promotion to division 1, losing just one game all season – a great achievement by the team.

The second team retained their position in the second division finishing in fourth place, a commendable effort.

The Summer leagues are almost immediately upon us and our First team will be in Division 1 and our second team will be in Division 2B with some tough fixtures ahead. Both teams lost their first matches in the Summer League and with the students away for the summer, we will need to ensure we have strong squads so please make sure you are available if you want to play.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website

Sunday Club Night

Numbers have been very low over the last few weeks which could lead to pressure from SportsPark to reduce the number of courts available. Do come along to support club night or let me know if you would prefer club night to be at another time, viz Friday night or Saturday.

The times for club night ( every Sunday night ) are from 17.00 pm  to 19.40 .It is an opportunity to play other league players of all standards and also some non RUSC members, many from other clubs and some of a high standard.
