Annual Club Knockout Tournament

Will be starting to prepare the annual club tournament which will run from October through to finals on Sunday 17th December. Details of previous year’s tournaments are on the website but there will be three tournaments with the league players split between A,B & C and for each there will be main competition with the first round losers going to the plate competition. Based on current numbers, the competition will start with the round of 16 through to the finals.

In the usual way ,all current league players will be eligible  but, in the usual way ,let me know if you do NOT wish to be included

Racketball

Quite a few members enjoyed the taster sessions but not really enough to justify continued sessions or the forming of a ladder. For those interested , Geoff does have a stock of racketball rackets and balls

Annual RUSC fees

By the end of this league, the annual club fee will need to be paid and I am pleased to say that it has been retained at £15 which covers, annual England squash fee, website costs, annual knockout tournament etc.

Please ensure that your fee is paid before the end of this league with the payment methods remaining the same :

1.Credit card payment – see website

2. Bank transfer  ( preferred) to the club account number 81092774 sort code 40 36 03 (please give it a reference of your surname and "league fee")

3. Cash to me at club night

This year there will be a draw for TWO club tee shirts at the end of this league and all those who have paid by that date will be eligible.

Team Matches

Both teams are finding it tough  in the Berkshire Summer  Leagues, with , as at 20thth July matches both teams having played seven and six matches respectively  and won just two .

The first team is in the relegation zone but with every chance of fighting their way out. The second team are in fourth place , just above the relegation spot..

We do need more volunteers for team matches so please make sure you are available if you want to play.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website.

Club squash shirts

The original design (in the two different colours) are still available and still at £17.50 each. The new range of tee shirts, as proudly worn by the teams, is available in a wide range of colours with the squash club logo printed thereon at a mere £10 each. Both shirts are now produced by Geoff at The Racket Shop. In the first instance, please let me know if you are interested.

Sunday Club Night - IMPORTANT

SportsPark have commented on the recent low numbers attending club night and have indicated that they wish to cut back to just two courts. We have said that over the last few weeks numbers have been increasing  ( ideally we need  at least 10+ attending to justify 4 courts ) and they have agreed to review again in about 4 weeks time.

If you don’t support club night then inevitably the courts will be reduced ( we have already cut back from 7.40 onwards) and the next stage might be to reduce to two courts from , say 7.00pm.

Do come along to support club night or let me know if you would prefer club night to be at another time, viz Friday night or Saturday. Also can I ask VO2 max players , who do not have to pay for club night , to make sure they register at SportsPark reception as otherwise their numbers are not included. You can , incidentally, just book for club night on the online system.

The times for club night ( every Sunday night ) are from 17.00 pm  to 19.40 .It is an opportunity to play other league players of all standards and also some non RUSC members, many from other clubs and some of a high standard.

Details of the new league are on the website.

This league runs to Sunday 26th January ( an extra week for the Christmas period and the knockout competition ) and the following league will end Sunday 9th March .

League news

Welcome to 10 players joining and rejoining the league and with 8 dropping out ( 5 more injured ) , we have 67 players with a further 14 out injured or away. A welcome back to several old faces who have been absent for various reasons - bit like “ the good, the bad and the ugly” returning but will let you decide who is who!

In the last league, 156 games were played being 94% of games , with 53 players playing all their games and 9 who did not . There were some very close leagues some going down to games difference so remember that every game is important .

League news -November 2017

posted 6 Nov 2017, 08:28 by Richard Porter

This league runs to Sunday 14th January and then the following leagues will end Sunday 25th February and 8th April respectively.

                                       League news

Welcome to 5 players joining and rejoining the league and with  3 dropping out, we have 56 players with a further 8 out injured or away.

We welcome back Dan Ford who took an 8 month break from squash to cycle up ( and down ) mountains and for the first time since March 2013 is back playing right handed, mainly !

As mentioned last time, the movements through the top divisions have been greater than usual but should result in competitive boxes and also reducing the divisions mainly back to seven players. Still have eight players in Divisions 2 & 3 which I will try to reduce down next league but again with more relegations than usual.

The students will be departing for their Christmas break 8th December and not returning till 8th January which means they will want to get their games in before they go, so please try and prioritise their games. This applies to Premier, Divisions  2 and 5.

In the last league, 126 games were played , being  90% of games , with 33 players playing all their games and 16 who did not with  13 games not played.

Rankings

The following are the biggest increases in rankings in the last league :

Alex Lane                       +122 points

Alex Pitt                        +101 points

James Ball                     + 99points

Ed Hawkins                     +98 points

Richard Porter               + 83 points

Clive Eeles                      +79 points

Annual Club Knockout Tournament

Good progress in the annual club tournament which has now reached the quarter final stages and the next deadline is the 26th November through to finals on Sunday 17th December. So just three weeks now to play your quarter final games.

Please ensure that results are sent to me (even if you write the result on the draw sheets which are on the notice board) so that the website draw can be kept up to date ( particularly as I am away from 14th November to 4th December ).

Annual RUSC fees

The draw for two club tee shirts took place at club night on the 24th September and the winners were Michelle Firrell and John Cronin who have now received their new shirts .Consolation prizes of two squash  balls were won by Richard Miall, Joe Hill and Sam Dumble

Point scoring – PAR or HiHO

You should have seen the results of the poll but,if not :

Overall response was from 36 people ( 63% of the total) .

Of the total, 14 voted in favour of change and 14 voted against change with 8 with no preference. In the vote for the preferred scoring system 17 voted for the existing HiHo  and 15 for PAR with a marginal preference for PAR to 15.

Finally, the overall vote for whether the same scoring should apply throughout the leagues was 23 in favour with 4 against and 5 “ no preference”.

In summary, therefore , there is no clear majority for a change  overall but equally  as nearly 39% wanted change, it seems appropriate that where two players agree to play PAR scoring to 15 then they can do so but the default position will remain HiHo. This will be introduced into the rules from the next league, starting 6th November.

Team Matches

In the winter leagues the first team play in Division 1 and the second team in Division 2. Currently the First team have played three matches and won 2, just maintaining their top position.

The Second team have lost all three games and are in last position but with plenty of games left to improve their position.

The next home game is on 9th November with the second team at home.

With the additional players in the leagues, hopefully, we should be fielding some strong teams over the coming months but always  need more volunteers for team matches so please make sure you are available if you want to play.

Support is always welcome and appreciated – the forthcoming games are shown on the website.

Walkovers ,cancellations ,lateness ,court fees, responses and injuries

Unfortunately, there were several moans in the last league about lateness on court and also failure to reply to e-mails giving dates for games.

Therefore, for the benefit of the many recent joiners and possibly some of the existing players I have re-stated the position in respect of, firstly , players who do not turn up for a league game .   Most players would  automatically offer a walkover to their opponent in these circumstances and equally most opponents  try and re-arrange the game as they would rather play than take a walkover but as it gets towards the end of the league , this becomes increasingly difficult and thus walkovers are the only option.

Secondly, if anyone cancels a game, for whatever reason, then the onus is on them to re-arrange the game, if there is time, but otherwise the previous comments will equally apply.

Unfortunately, there are a few players who have a track record for late cancellations or not showing and this will be taken into account in deciding whether a walkover is appropriate.

If anyone turns up late for a game, the rules clearly provide for this situation whereby if the game is not finished then the late arrival loses the match, with the score dependent on the actual games played (see rules) .

Finally, despite all the reminders, there are still members who do not respond to requests for games which is not only annoying for those who make the effort to organise their games but is also discourteous . If you do not respond to requests for games then walkovers will be awarded ( saying you are unable to play without offering alternative dates is the same as no response ).

There is a facility on your profile to show if you are away and should be used if you are away during a league period .If you know you are going to be away for a longer period then please drop out of the league and return the following league to avoid inconveniencing players.

The rules for injuries are clearly stated under “ Rules “ - rule ix and cover both on court injuries and other injuries. If you are injured then you must be let me know when you are fit again and ready to return to the leagues. Walkovers can only be claimed by referring to me with all the relevant information.

If you do not play a game, please do not decide on a 2-2 result as that is not in the spirit of the leagues and is unfair on those who make every effort to play their games.

Finally, it is expected that the person who has booked the court be offered half the court rate applicable by the other player, especially if that player does not have VO2 max membership.

League News - June 2015

posted 29 Jun 2015, 15:33 by Richard Porter

This league runs to Sunday 23rd August ( longer period for holidays ) and the following league will end Sunday 4th October

League news

Welcome to 2 players joining and rejoining the league and with 5 dropping out, we now have 59 players with a further 18 out injured or away.

In the last league, 140 games were played being 90% of games , with 39 players playing all their games and , disappointingly, 18 who did not.

Farewell to Dan and Beth who have now departed to the new University of Reading campus in Malaysia-- they have extended a welcome to any squashies visiting the area ( I put that bit in but I am sure they would love to see any visitors out there !). Thanks to Dan for his tremendous contribution to the leagues since joining nearly 5 years ago, reigning Club Champion and for his commitment to team squash , contributing to our continued success over the last few years.

Congratulations to Lefty Dan who has reached his target of Division 1 – a tremendous accomplishment particularly if you have ever tried playing wrong -handed.

Ranking Points

There were some big increases in ranking points in the last league period: – 4 of whom finishing top or winning promotion in their respective divisions.

Ed Hawkins +155 points

Lefty Dan +129 points

Mark Elliott +118 points

Richard Porter +118 points

Cathy +105 points

Mark Brandon +105 points

Summer Team tournament

The summer tournament is well under way with 12 of the 20 matches now arranged. To date ten matches have been played and currently Group A is led by Vivek's team and Group B by Mike's team but still a long way to go

The winning team is the one with the highest points total ( maximum 99 per match ) and the two group winners and second placed teams will be the teams with the highest number of points and in the event of tied points, the team with the most games won or if that is also tied the higher points difference will win.

The matches can be played at your convenience ( apart from the semi-finals and finals) but you might want to try and play at the same time to enhance the competitive and fun element.

The results will be posted on the website as they take place.

Annual Club Knockout tournament

Subject to interest , we will be starting the annual club tournament late August with the finals on 12th December . The first round will be played by early October so ,please , let me know by 31st July if you do NOT want to play and if you are not currently in the league but would like to be included.

Is this the year that Fordy is going to put his name back on the trophy as Club Champion or will Geoff have something to say about that or even could there be any dark horses out there?

As before the entrants will be divided into three equal groups ( grades A, B and C ) which based on present numbers will consist of the top three divisions, middle three and last three with both a main competition and a plate competition for first round losers.

Team Matches

The Summer season leagues are in full flow and the 1st team who have won their last two matches are in 3rd place with only a few points between the 2nd and 4th placed teams. The second team are unbeaten after their first four matches and top their division.

The next home games are on the 9th July for the 1sts and 6th August for the 2nds – do come and support

With a few departures we will need as many players as possible making themselves available for the forthcoming matches so please make yourself available for selection. Please let me or Dan Ford know if you are interested in playing.

Support is always welcome and appreciated.

Payment of court fees

I have been asked recently about contributions to court fees. It is expected that players should offer to pay 50% of the court cost but , clearly ,if two VO2 Max players are playing each other then one would not expect any contribution to take place . If a V02 Max player has booked the court ( and probably had to arrange the date as well ) against a “ pay as you go member “ viz , Classic or VO2 membership then the latter should offer to pay 50% of the “ court cost” – based on what is applicable at the time played. For example, for classic membership the court fee at peak time is now £8 and thus the contribution would be £4 . This applies equally to two classic members playing whereby the person booking the court should be offered 50% of the relevant court fee which depends on the time of the game and whether the member is an internal ( staff etc ) or external member - all the fees are shown on the SportsPark website .

http://www.sport.reading.ac.uk/documents/SportsParkFacilitiesCharges.pdf

Annual RUSC Squash Fees

It is that time of year when the annual fees ( unchanged again) of £15 are due ( payable before the end of this league) and therefore, please pay in the next few weeks to avoid unnecessary chasing. If not paid , you will not be included in the next league . Anyone who joined the leagues since 1st May 2015 has already “ paid” .

Payment methods are as before: ( preferred method – Bank transfer – as this costs the club nothing)

You can either post a cheque (payable to "RU Squash club") for £15 to Geoff at the shop (address below) or make a transfer to the club account number 81092774 sort code 40 36 03 (please give it a reference of your surname and "league fee" so that it can be tracked) and also now you can pay by credit card/paypal - see website > membership.

Part of the fee will go towards your England Squash membership (see www.englandsquash.com for details) and the rest towards website costs, competitions etc.

The times for club night ( every Sunday night ) have now been changed back to the summer times of 17.40 pm to 20.20 .It is an opportunity to play other league players of all standards and also some non RUSC members, many from other clubs and some of a high standard. Numbers are still low and already we have given back two of the later courts so do give support to Club Night if it is to continue.

Finally, I will be away for three weeks from 16th July and whilst I will be able to respond on e-mails , the beach and sailing will take priority!!

League News - December

posted 30 Dec 2014, 05:34 by Richard Porter

This league runs to Sunday 15th February and the following league will end Sunday 29th March

League news

Welcome to 5 players joining and rejoining the league and with 6 dropping out we now have 62 players with a further 15 out injured or away.

As there were still four leagues of 8 ,the usual promotion / relegation rules have not applied which means you might not have been promoted even if you finished second and might have been relegated even if you were in 4th or 5th place. We are down to just two leagues of 8 and, hopefully, we will be back to usual numbers next league.

In the last league, 155 games were played being 92% of games , with 42 players playing all their games and 17 who did not.

Ranking Points

There were some significant increases in ranking points for the biggest movers and, of these the top 4 also won promotion:

Mike Bruyns-Haylett   +271 points ( a record increase)

James Mathers           +195 points

Paul Janota                 +164 points

Phil Harkness              +159 points

James Ball                  +134 points

Filip Cieliski                +124 points

Mauricio Toledo         +120 points

Annual club tournament

In this year's Club Championship , Dan Jones beat Dan Ford 3-0

B Final – Adam Korzeniowski beat Jason Pelly 3-1

C Final – Mike Helmkay beat Omar Ehsan 3-1

Plate A - Mark Osborne beat Nick Bush 3-0

Plate B - Steve D'Cruz beat Paul Janota 3-2

Plate C – James Fitzpatrick beat Mauricio Toledo 3-2

As ever , the standard of squash was high with some close and entertaining games, culminating in the club championship which was watched by a large audience appreciative of some high standard squash with some great rallies.

The matches were marked by Lorraine, Richard and Mark with thanks to them and also to SportsPark for the courts and to The Racket Shop for their sponsorship .

Finally thanks to Ivan for his role as match photographer and the photos can be viewed:

Team Matches

Having lost their first two games at the beginning of the season and then winning the next four the first team are in third place in Division 1 .Their next home game is on 22nd January against Windsor 1 , which if they win ( and their away game on the 8th January ) will take them back to 2nd place.

The 2nd team have lost only one game this season and are in 2nd place just behind the team they beat last match. Their next home game is on the 8th January against the 3rd placed team.

The fixtures for the Winter Leagues are on the website and as ever we still need volunteers to play team squash so please make yourself available for selection. Please let me or Dan Ford know if you are interested in playing.
Support is always welcome and appreciated.

Thefts at SportsPark

Unfortunately there have been several thefts recently , both from the changing rooms and from behind the courts ( 1 & 2) so take extra care with your belongings.

Walkovers and injuries

Again this league, there were several moans about lack of response.

Despite all the reminders, there are still members who do not respond to requests for games which is annoying for those who make the effort to organise their games over the league period . If you do not respond to requests for games then walkovers will be awarded ( saying you are unable to play without offering alternative dates is the same as no response ). If you are busy or unable to play, then , at least, reply and suggest alternative dates.

There is a facility on your profile to show if you are away and should be used if you are away during a league period .

The rules for injuries are clearly stated under “ Rules “ - rule ix and cover both on court injuries and other injuries. If you are injured then you must be let me know when you are fit again and ready to return to the leagues.

Walkovers can only be claimed by referring to me with all the relevant information.

Sunday Club Night

Come along on Club Night which is every Sunday night from 17.40 to 20.00 and is an opportunity to play other league players of all standards and also some non RUSC members. It is likely that we will shortly be changing the times to 17.00 pm till 19.40 and further advices will follow

Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year and good luck in your games

Latest League News

Details of the new league are on the website.

This league runs to Sunday 2nd November and the following league will end Sunday 21st December ( extra time for Christmas and the knockout competition )

League news

Welcome to 6 players joining and rejoining the league but with 7 dropping out ( 4 injured and 2 moving away ) we now have 57 players with a further 17 out injured or away.

We say farewell to Nick Carne who is leaving shortly for Australia where his wife is taking up a new job and Nick is going to be a “ beach bum” !! Thanks to Nick who has been a regular league and team player for RUSC and wishing you both every happiness in Oz.

Hopefully, many of you will be able to join Nick at his farewell drinks on Friday 18th September at The Walkabout from 7.30 pm

Also a temporary farewell to Paul Robson who is returning to Yorkshire for a year but will then be back to Reading

In the last league, 138 games were played being 91% of games , with 39 players playing all their games and 15 who did not ( 10 from Div 6 & 7 ).

The biggest improvements in ranking points over the previous league:

Nick Bush + 199 points

Adam + 148 points

Kirsty + 139 points

Paul Robson + 109 points

Matt Wright + 102 points

Incredibly, despite his massive increase in ranking points , Nick still missed promotion by 1 point!

Annual RUSC Squash Fees

Thank you to everyone for paying their fees ( apart from 2 !! ).

Walkovers ,cancellations and lateness

Another reminder seems necessary !

For the benefit of the many recent joiners and possibly some of the existing players I have re-stated the position in respect of , firstly , players who do not turn up for a league game . Most players would automatically offer a walkover to their opponent in these circumstances and equally most opponents try and re-arrange the game as they would rather play than take a walkover but as it gets towards the end of the league , this becomes increasingly difficult and thus walkovers are the only option.

Secondly, if anyone cancels a game, for whatever reason, then the onus is on them to re-arrange the game , if there is time , but otherwise the previous comments will equally apply.

Unfortunately , there are a few players who have a track record for late cancellations or not showing and this will be taken into account in deciding whether a walkover is appropriate.

If anyone turns up late for a game, the rules clearly provide for this situation whereby if the game is not finished then the late arrival loses the match, with the score dependent on the actual games played ( see rules ) . There is no point complaining to me after the game as the rules are clear .

Walkovers can only be claimed by referring to me with all the relevant information.

Responses for matches and profiles

Several complaints again last league so- once again!

Despite all the reminders, there are still members who do not respond to requests for games which is annoying for those who make the effort to organise their games . If you do not respond to requests for games then walkovers will be awarded ( saying you are unable to play without offering alternative dates is the same as no response ).

There is a facility on your profile to show if you are away and should be used if you are away during a league period .

Team Matches

Congratulations to the First team who remained unbeaten and won their division in the Berkshire Summer League – a great achievement .

Unfortunately the Second team never quite got into their stride and were eventually relegated but there were several club players who made their first appearances in the team colours.

No sooner is one league period over and the new one starts. The fixtures for the Winter Leagues are on the website and as ever we still need volunteers to play team squash. Please let me or Dan Ford know if you are interested in playing.

The next home games are on the 18th September for the 1sts and 2nd October for the 2nds so please make yourself available for selection. Support is always welcome and appreciated

Annual club tournament

This year's club tournament is under way with many of the first round games now played . If you have not yet played, the deadline is the 28th September so make sure you get those 1st round games played shortly. Losers in the first round will go to the plate as will the first few losers playing in the second round to make up the eight quarter finalists.

Sunday Club Night

Numbers have been dropping recently and it will be sad if we lose this facility so please come along to Club Night which is every Sunday night from 17.40 to 20.00 and is an opportunity to play other league players of all standards and also some non RUSC members.

Good luck in your games

Latest League News

posted 29 Jan 2014, 02:43 by Richard Porter

Details of the new league are on the website.

This league runs to Sunday 16th March and the following league will end Sunday 4th May .

League news

Welcome to 7 players joining and rejoining the league and with 5 dropping out , we have 69 players with a further 13 out injured or away.

In the last league, 164 games were played being 96% of games , with 56 players playing all their games and 7 who did not .

As many of you know, Paul Phillips suffered a nasty injury ( broken humerus – it wasn't funny at the time ) in his league game against Vinnie when he decided to try and push his elbow and arm through the side wall ( there was only going to be one winner ) but the good news is that he hopes to be back playing in 6 to 8 weeks following an operation last week. As Dan said “Didn't you see the wall, I am sure it has always been there“. Vinnie could not be contacted for comment other than to refer to his solicitors , although it was rumoured that he asked,as Paul was being taken away by ambulance “Does this mean I win the match ??”

Congratulations to Phil ,who not only won promotion to Division 1 but also won the B knockout final , and to Lefty Dan who finally wins promotion to Division 2 which hopefully compensates for losing the Club Championship to Jonesy , who is returning to the leagues and finally to Richard Miall who also completed the “ double “ by winning the C plate and promotion.

Website and Facebook

Hopefully, you are looking regularly at the website for up to date news and information and will see that we now have our own Facebook page ( with thanks to Ivan ) with nearly a third of the club now being members but I am sure others could join as well.

If you have any ideas about other items that could be on the website or have any information for “ Club news “ then please let Ivan , Charles or myself know.

2013 Club Annual Knockout championships

The finals took place yesterday and,as usual, there was a high standard of squash with many entertaining games watched by an appreciative audience.

The roll of honour was;

Plate competitions

C - Richard Miall beat Tom Tingay 3/0

B - Ian Wright beat Emily Smith 3/0

A - Charles Smith beat Ivan Hoh 3/0

Main competitions

C - Jeff Unsworth beat John Scorgie 3/0

B – Phil Harkness beat Tim Widdows 3/1

A - Dan Jones beat Dan Ford 3/0

This means that over the last 5 years the Club Championship has now been won by Fordy 3 times and Jonesy twice.

With thanks to Matt and Mark E for marking, to The Racket Shop for support and sponsorship and to Mark C for help in presenting the trophies and prizes.

The photos taken at the tournament finals yesterday will be posted on Facebook, with thanks to Ivan

As an update to the last “ News” -”There are several interesting matches to come- will Emilio beat Dan Ford ( left and right handed ! ) ....NO. Could Jo and Jason get to the finals ? “ ...NO but Emily and John did , but not the same finals to Emily's relief!

Responses for matches

There were some very close leagues so remember that every game is important and make sure you do respond quickly to requests for games . It is annoying if you do not respond to requests for games and walkovers can be awarded. Every league there are players who do not play all their games- often the same people which always seems strange to me if you have joined a league to play squash!!

On an amusing note , I was told about a response to a request for a game.. ” weekdays aren't very good for me and I can't play weekends”... OK and you still want to play league squash ??!!

Team Matches

In the Winter league the first team remain comfortably at the top of the league, having lost just one match .

The second team are having a mixed season but are still staying out of the relegation zone but ideally need to win some of their next matches, having narrowly lost 3-2 to Beechdown last week .

Do read the excellent match reports posted on the website and, better still , come along and support

The next home match is Thursday 6th February when the 1st team are at home to Burghfield and on the 20th February when the 2nds are at home to Wellington.

As ever players are still wanted for the the leagues so please make yourself available if you are interested in playing and also reply to the requests for specific matches . You are welcome to come along and support - fixtures are shown on the website.

Sunday Club Night

A reminder that this takes place every Sunday night from 17.40 to 20.00 and is an opportunity to play other league players of all standards and also some non RUSC members.
