FAQs

Please see the frequently asked questions below, with answers I have typically provided.  I would appreciate it if you could search here to resolve any questions you have before contacting me - as you can imagine, it gets boring to say the same thing over and over again.  If you can't find the answers to your questions here, or in the tutorials, please contact me and I will do what I can to help you.  The FAQs are listed in no particular order.

How does the check for updates option work?

On startup, the ruler downloads a file called ver.txt to the installed directory.  This is a simple text file that contains the latest version of the programme as a text string (eg 2.2.0.0).  If the versions match, the file is deleted.  If not, it prompts you to download the latest version.  The current default behaviour is to check for the latest version.

How do I turn the check for updates option off?

Right-click the ruler, go to the Updates tab, deselect the "Check for updates on startup" option.  That's it.

Top

Do you collect any info from my computer when the programme checks for updates?

No.

Top

Can I calibrate the ruler?

Yes.  You can calibrate the ruler by right clicking on it to bring up the Options dialogue, going to the Calibrate tab and manually changing the pixels per inch in the direction the ruler is currently pointing.  The ruler will remember the settings the next time you run it.  Make sure to reset the ruler if you are using the portable version on different monitors.

Why won't the installer for the programme install / run on my OS?

Tens of thousands of visitors have installed the programme with no reported issues on the Microsoft operating systems shown above.  If you have a problem with the program, please check the following to see if they address your issue.
  • The check sum of the file you downloaded must match the checksums published here.
  • You must have administrator privileges on the computer you are using (during the installation).
  • You must have an active internet connection at the time you are installing the program
  • You may have installed the portable version (which would unzip to a location on your computer)
If you have checked the above items, please contact me (listing your operating system, where you tried to download the programme from, what OS and what browser you are using) so I can determine whether there is a pattern.

Why does the programme not show up in Add/Remove programmes?

Please check to see whether you installed the portable version (which would merely unzip to a location on your computer determined by the unzipping programme) instead of the installer.  The portable version is called WinRulerPortable.zip and the installer is called WinRuler.zip.  Please visit the downloads page to obtain the installer, if that is the version you want to use.  Windows 7 users must sometimes reboot before the installation shows up in Add/Remove programmes.

I clicked the download link - where on earth is the programme?

That depends upon the default download location of your browser.  To determine or change the default download location of your browser, please follow the links below - they take you to the help pages for the browser you are using.  If your browser is not listed, it is because my log analyzer grouped it into "others"

Can I simultaneously run a horizontal ruler and a vertical one?

Absolutely - use Ctrl + N to launch a new ruler with the opposite orientation.  Alternatively, just launch the programme twice and change one to horizontal and one vertical.  When you exit the programme, the settings for the last ruler you close will be saved.

Top

Does the programme support multiple monitors?

Yes, however, if they have different pixels per inch, the values used will be from the main monitor since this is what Windows reports.

Top

Who are you?

A night owl married to an early bird. She falls asleep by 9:00 pm - one reason for this programme.

Why did you make a portable version?

Software that is portable leaves no traces on the host machine.  Installation is a matter of unzipping the programme to a convenient directory (say a thumb drive) instead of writing to the windows programme folder.  Since the programme is never installed, you can take it with you to any computer you use and not have to worry about having administrative privileges on the machine.  Your registry does not grow because nothing is written to it, so the programme does not slow your machine down any.

Why is it free?

Why should you have to pay for my fun?

Top

I understand it is free - but may I support this programme anyway?

  • If you were thinking of sending money, please donate to your favorite charity instead.
  • If you were thinking of sending good wishes, please contact me.  Please explicitly let me know whether I may post your comment on this site (email address removed, and name truncated to initials, of course).

Will you ever sell my email address?

No.

Top

Will you ever contact me for any reason other than the one I emailed you?

No.  I will contact you only to respond to a question you asked me.

Why do you require me to put d962559f-9ab7-424d in the header of my emails to you?

There is a class of troglodytes (more conventionally known as spammers) who offer me products and services I have absolutely no interest in.  This would not normally be an issue, except the sheer volume of spam I receive drowns out your emails.  I send all emails with the magic header into a separate folder and delete the others on principle.  When the spammers clue in, I change the magic header.  Thanks for understanding and sorry for the inconvenience.

I hate something about the programme - can you fix it?

Possibly - please contact me to tell me what you dislike and I will see whether I can fix it.  If it does not relate to the core purpose of this programme - to measure things on the screen - it will probably not be incorporated.

Top

Some other ruler has functionality X - can you duplicate it?

Possibly - please contact me to tell me what you dislike and I will see if I can incorporate it into the next edition if it is within my capabilities.

Top

May I list your software for download on my site?

Yes - but only in accordance with the license.  Please link to the locations of the files on the downloads page so your site always has the latest version.

Top

Do you have a list of features being prepared for the next version?

Yes.

Top

When will the next version be released?

Unknown.  Unknowable.  Please don't email to ask because I really don't have a schedule.

Top

Will you email me when the next version is released?

No.  I have no provision to do so since I do not store email addresses.  The programme checks to see whether your version is the latest.  If it is not, and if you have allowed automatic updates, it will prompt you to download the latest version from the downloads page.

What tools did you use to create this programme?

  • Borland® C++Builder® for Microsoft® Windows™ (C++ compiler and IDE)
  • Nullsoft scriptable install system version 2.45 (install creator) on the Eclipse IDE
  • Portable Filezilla version 3.3.0.1 (ftp programme)
  • Portable Komposer version 0.7.10 (20070831) (html editor)

How many downloads has this programme had?

I've listed the approximate number on this page, which includes downloads from this and all known sites hosting the programme.

Top

Do you plan a version for Mac / Linux / other OS?

Sorry, no.

Top

Can the programme run on Linux under Wine?

Yes, with glitches.  The basic functionality seems to work on Linux Mint under Wine, though dragging is glitchy.  It has not been fully tested on this platform.

Top

Some functionality does not work

Most likely this is because it was implemented in the development version.  The documentation is updated to reflect improvements as they are made.  The development version is available for download and tested by users for some time before being released
