For example, the fascinating Markoff conjecture, that celebrated its centenary in the year 2013. To know more about this conjecture see the articles 7 (in Spanish) and 16 below, where you can find an elementary proof of the conjecture in the prime power case that can be understood by even a nonmathematician (who knows what a gcd, greatest common divisor is).
