One morning, when my son was five years old, I happened to be passing by the door to his bedroom, when I heard him say, quietly but distinctly, “Come on mind, don’t trick me.”
I walked into his room and saw him searching through the toys that he kept on the floor of his closet. I asked him what he was doing.
He said, "I'm looking for my GI Joe action figure. My mind is telling me I'll never find it, but I know I will!"
It amazed me that my young son could tell the difference between "mindtalk" - the automatic, internal commentary of the mind - and his own thinking.
A few years later, we wrote this book for children, to give families an understanding of this phenomenon and a language to begin helping each other deal with it.
