Founded in America in 1917, Lions Clubs International currently has:

1.4m Lions members in 47,000 clubs in 200+ countries worldwide.

The first club in the UK (London Host) opened in 1950 at the instigation of the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Lions Clubs International is known for working to end preventable blindness and has a record of involvement in sight related issues dating back to 1925, when Helen Keller challenged Lions to become "Knights in the crusade against darkness". 

Lions instigated the White Cane; introduced and continue to support Guide Dog Schools; operate the majority of the worlds’ eye banks, have financed eye hospitals and trained ophthalmic personnel.

Lions currently have 5 global causes for service: Diabetes, Environment, Hunger, Vision & Childhood Cancer.
