Founded in America in 1917, Lions Clubs International currently has:

1.4m Lions members in 43,000 clubs in 193 countries worldwide.

19,000 members in 950 clubs in the UK & Ireland.

The first club in the UK (London Host) opened in 1950 at the instigation of the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Lions Clubs International is known for working to end preventable blindness and has a record of involvement in sight related issues dating back to 1925, when Helen Keller challenged Lions to become "Knights in the crusade against darkness". 


Lions instigated the White Cane; introduced and continue to support Guide Dog Schools; operate the majority of the worlds’ eye banks, have financed 136 eye hospitals and trained 13,000 ophthalmic personnel.
