What a great way to complete the first 50 years of the Mobile Genealogical Society as we celebrated with a gala event at our February 11th General Membership Meeting. There were at least 60 of our members plus 17 guests. One, Susan Hedrick, from far away Pennsylvania, came to Mobile for the first time in search of her ancestors and, luckily, with the help of others, she found what she was looking for. Yes, this is what genealogy is all about. We exist to help researchers discover the joy that comes when finding the missing pieces of the family puzzle or breaking down brick walls.

As members, visitors and guests arrived at the sign-in Membership Table, each was presented with a beautiful and colorful 50th Anniversary Commemoration and Capital Campaign Report Booklet and a printed Program. President Mary Ann Ingram welcomed everyone. The Invocation was given by Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb, Emeritus. Greetings and a Proclamation from the Honorable Mayor Samuel L. Jones were presented by City Council Member, Ms. Gina Gregory, District 7.

Seven of the thirteen living past presidents attended and were recognized by the president. Those present and years they served were: Thelma E. Hartman, 1986 – 1987; Mary Ann Ingram, 1990 – 1991; Jacqueline W. Hines, 1992; Craig D. Rhodes, 1993 - 1996; Kevin D. Sellew, 1998 – 1999; Debbie Nicoll, part of 2009; Dorothy E. Thompson, part of 2009; Mary Ann Ingram, 2011 – 2012. Those who were not able to be present are: Dolores Rhodes, 1997; Victoria H. Bishop, 2001 – 2002; Thomas W. Carnes, 2002 – 2005; Mary Eddins Johnson, 2006 – 2008 and Eugenia W. Parker, 2010. There have been a total of 29 presidents who have led the society in its 50-year history.
