    1. Pentateuch scroll (unopened)

                A. In Luke 4:16-30 Jesus unrolled the scroll of Isaiah and read from it. He said he fulfilled the prophecy “’The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ “Luke 4:18-19

    2. Dead Sea with Sea of Galilee above and Jordan River

    A. Show Satellite photo, the one in exhibit book, and the one on the next page.

    B. Mediterranean Sea to left and Sea of Galilee on top. Jordon River flows out of the Sea of Galilee and into the Dead Sea. The Jordan River is where Jesus was baptized. (MT 3:13)

    C. Note that water goes into the Dead Sea but nothing comes out. It is dead just as we are dead when we take, take, take and don’t give out.

    D. The Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth at 1,349 feet below sea level. We are at our lowest when we just want, want, want and don’t give.

    E. The Dead Sea has ten times as much salt as the ocean. You can actually sit in the water and float!

    F. Remember Lot’s wife was turned to a pillar of salt when she turned back to look at sin.  Genesis 19:26 But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. She was dead just like this salty sea.

Some scholars believe that Jesus wasn’t born in a barn, which was popular for animals in what we now call Europe. Caves were very popular for animals in Bethlehem.

    3. Lost Goat

    A. A shepherd boy lost a goat in 1947. (Show the picture.)

    B. Remember that the Jewish high priest on the Day of Atonement put his hands on a goat and symbolically put the sins of his people and sent him off into the desert with a man to look after it?

Leviticus 16: 21-22  21 He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. 22 The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert.

    C. Jesus commented about goats:

Matthew 25:33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Matthew 25:34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

Matthew 25: 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Scholars used many methods to determine the age of

    the scrolls.

                1. Historical

              2. Paleographic - The study and scholarly interpretation of

earlier, especially ancient, writing and forms of writing.

              3. Linguistic

    4. Carbon-14 dating – Only works on items that at one time lived like plants or animals. Must be VERY careful with interpretation. The atomic bomb has had a great impact.

Scholars determined that the scrolls were from roughly

250BC to 68AD!!!  They were written BEFORE Jesus

came and some were written after Jesus had left!!!

    The most important fact learned:

The Old Testament existed in Hebrew and Aramaic

    BEFORE Jesus was born.

That means that it was truly prophetic,

    like NO other books.

They said a Messiah would come and He did.

    It is Jesus.

NO one person could fulfill the prophecies

    except for Jesus.
