Arriva Buses Wales could be said to be the direct descendant of Crosville which commenced in 1906 and was the major provider of bus services in north Wales and also parts of north west England. Following privatisation and bus deregulation in the 1980's Crosville was split into two with Crosville Wales Limited taking up operations in north Wales. This company changed hands a number of times and became part of the Cowie Group. Arriva was then adopted as the new trading name and a common national brand developed. All the individual regional Arriva companies including Arriva Cymru Limited are currently part of the German Deutsche Bahn AG group.
Until January 2009 Arriva Buses Wales was part of Arriva North West & Wales which had its headquarters in Aintree, Liverpool but it is now a separate entity with its own management structure and its head office is in Bangor. However the fleet numbering system is still shared with Arriva North West and there are usually regular transfers between the two units.
