            2011  DISTRICT CONVENTION

        Let’s Get In G.E.A.R.- Get Excited About Ruritan

 

  The 2011 Rockingham District Convention was held on Saturday Nov.5th. at the Broadway High

School.  DG Rick Keyton’s motto for the year was- Let’s get in” G.E.A.R..”  “ Let’s Get Excited About Ruritan”.  David Grimm (R’ham Luncheon Club)  and Z4G Susan Greisz did a super job in organizing the event and decorating the tables. Susan had the America theme, with Red, White and Blue. It was very nicely done. Nancy Brubaker and MaryAnn Everhart (of the Belmont Club), along with Margie Mayes (Port Republic Club) and Wilma Grimm (R’ham Luncheon Club)  did an outstanding job with the refreshment.  Total attendance exceeded 325 people.

 

   The Business Session was held at 2:30 PM. Special Guests were David Mullins, General Manager of WVPT-TV, Fay Spitler of the Daily News Record, and 25th House of Delegate-Steve Landes. Something new was done this year to help speed the meeting along---DG Keyton  put together Report Folders for the Club delegates and the District Cabinet members. Enclosed in these folders were reports from the ZGs., Committee Chair’s, last year minutes and the treasurer report. The delegates were then able to take these back to their Clubs. R/N Sec JoAnn Wenger (B’way-Timb Club) spoke to the district on behalf of the National Office. DG Keyton gave his “State of the District” report. He reported that the district, as of Nov.1st, had 1657 “total” members---an increase of 37 members (mostly from the Wilmer Pence Middle School RuriTeen Club increase of membership of 37). Our TAHS Ruri-Teen Club states that that were planning on having another Fund Drive for the St Jude Hospital. Plans are to raise another $8.000.00. Hoping to get it to $40,000.00 amount.  Dan Brubaker (Clover Hill Club), Chair of the C.Z.D. Committee, reported that from this committee’s efforts,  they were able to encouraged Walt Gordon (Rileyville Club) to be a Candidate for 2012 National Director. 68 Club delegates were seated.  2010 DG H Ken Elkins (Dayton & R’ham Luncheon Clubs), Nominating Comm Chair, presented the slate of officers for 2012. DG John Case (Rileyville), DLtG Lori Ryan (Powhatan), DS Susan Greisz (W. Shen.), and DT-James Driver ((B’way-Timb & R’ham Luncheon Clubs) were presented to the Delegates for their consideration—all 4 were elected unanimously !  The meeting was adjourned by DLtG John Case at 3:57 PM.

 

   At 4:15 the  Training Session for Club Officers, ZGs and ZLtGs was held until 5:30 PM.

 

   The Evening Banquet session was called to order by DG Keyton, who then recognized our Past DGs, the 2011 Dist. Cabinet, and the Head Table. Pat Raynes (Belmont Community & McGaheysville Clubs) led everyone in a verse of “America”. Elmer Armentrout (10th Leg-Mtn Valley Club) gave the invocation. The meal was served by the Broadway Rescue Squad Ladies Aux.  Special Guests of the District, included the 2011 W/W District’s DG Mike Ruleman, newly elected  2012 DG Susan McIver, and 2012 DT, Hilda Hensley.

 

After the meal everyone was moved to the auditorium for the Evening session (Awards and Recognition Program) . Presidents of the Clubs were seated up front by their Zones.

Rev. Schurtz (Powhatan Club) conducted a very moving Memorial Service for the 9 fellow members who were deceased since 2010 Dist Conv. Six members were recognized for having 50 years Ruritan membership with a Gold name badge and a certificate presented to each.

Community Service Awards were given out by the ZGs, Dist Awards Chair,  Irma Housden (Luray Club), and DG Keyton. There were 56 Gold, 42 Silver, and 31 Bronze Awards given that provided Total Club Community Hours of  88,455 and Total Club Contributions of $ 365,555.64. The Mensel Dean Membership Growth Award was presented to the Hamburg Club. They added 6 members. Clubs having the largest % in growth went to Hamburg with a 24% and Rileyville with a 17% increase. The Club with the Most Net Member Increase was Rileyville Club, with second place ties among  McGaheysville, Tenth Legion-Mtn Valley, and West Rockingham  Clubs.  District Ruritan of the Year was presented to Gilbert Campbell (Luray Club)--he was also recognized as a 50 Year member . The District Ruriteen of the Year was presented to Rachel Leweke (TAHS Ruri-Teen Club) . Z4G Susan Greisz received the  District’s  ZG of the YEAR Award. Spoecial appreciation was shown to David Grimm and H Ken Elkins for their service in 2011 by DG Keyton.  Retiring DG Harry Propst received his Ruritan jacket.

2011 R/N VP, Phyllis Lewter, installed our 2012 District Officers. She also presented the keynote speech.   DG Keyton thanked all the Dist Cabinet members and expressed his thanks to all of the Clubs and Zones that he had visited during a wonderful year that he will remember forever. 2012 DG-elect, John Case presented DG Keyton with a glass plaque, as an expression of thanks for his year

   Bobbi Folk was the entertainer. Everyone enjoyed her singing. It was great. Three big Door Prizes were given away. These were get-away weekend vacation packets. 50/50 raffle brought in $402.00 w/ Dan Brubaker (Clover Hill) winning the $201.00. Bobbi Folk sang a very lovely song that she had written about the American Flag,  as Jeff Roadcap (Linville-Edom Club) wore his Air Force uniform from his Military service days, joined our District Ruritan of the Year (Gilbert Campbell) in presenting the American Flag to the group.

 

2012 DG-elect, John Case, closed the meeting with pledge allegiance at 9:02 PM.
