IFRAO sound files

Listing of sound files for paper entitled "Thunderous Reverberation and Rock Art Thunderstorm Imagery" by Steven J. Waller, [abstract here] [National Geographic online coverage here] and [panel discussion video here] presented at Congrès IFRAO de Tarascon-sur-Ariège2010, in the symposium SIGNS, SYMBOLS, MYTH, IDEOLOGY - Pleistocene Art: the archeological material and its anthropological meanings, and submitted for publication by IFRAO:

1) Niaux, France. Example of thunderous reverberation in the cavernous Salon Noir , which contains ungulate images similar to the hoofed animals held responsible for thunder in Eurasian mythology. Click this link to listen to: Waller_Thunder_NiauxSalonNoir_SoundRecordingR090032.wav

2) Lower Pecos River region, Texas. Thunderous reverberation in painted Shelter VV75 of Presa Canyon. See Figure 1 (top) for spectral analysis. Click this link to listen to: Waller_ThunderousReverbVV75SoundRecordingR090107.wav

3) Control in an open field, showing lack of reverberation. See Figure 1 (bottom) for spectral analysis. Click this link to listen to: Waller_Thunder_ControlNoReverb_SoundRecordingR090113.wav

4) Quebec, Canada. Rocher à la Oiseau ("Bird Rock"). The thunderbird rock art subject matter here is explicitly related to thunder and is consistent with the loud thunderous percussive reports that echo and reverberate off the decorated rock surface of this towering cliff face. See Figure 2 for spectral analysis. Click this link to listen to: Waller_Thunder_Oiseau_SoundRecordingR090002.wav
