Rocco d’Este is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Sussex, as well as a Research Associate at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) and a Research Fellow at IZA.

He is a labour economist working at the intersection of applied microeconomics and public policy, with a particular focus on criminal justice and institutional accountability.

His current research spans three areas: wrongful convictions and the exoneration of the innocent, with emphasis on DNA technologies, civil-society efforts, and prosecutorial incentives; prison conditions and governance, including the effects of drug markets, inspections, and managerial practices; and political influence, lobbying, and regulatory evasion in opaque institutional settings.
