Neurophysiology related to the Feldenkrais Method


Movement organization is a projection of the Central Nervous System functioning. For this reason, movement has the possibility of re-organizing this function.


Jean Le Boulch, in his book “Vers une science du mouvement humain” says,“Awareness of your own body is the necessary condition for the cortical intervention in the development of action”.


The same author clarifies, “...in order for that awareness to be possible, the person in a learning context needs some mental representation or image related to the movement he’s trying out in space. When the adequateness of the movement’s Image and the kinesthetic sensations originated by its performance is produced, we can say that pattern has been internalized”. (INTENTION/ACTION)


These internal emissions/impulses are not generated exclusively within the movement domain. Our thoughts, emotions, images, feelings, our attention’s organization, the way we order language (either in verbal communication with others or with ourselves) are integrated from a Somatic perspective, that is the reason we do Somatic Education through movement and hands-on as the main tools.


We give priority to kinesthetic elements like weight, tone, joints relations and pressure, gravity, movement, initiation, differentiation and integration availabity, breathing, quality of attention, body attitude, sight and so on.

These elements create a unique and subjective synthesis.


Both movement and contact are sensorial phenomena, but science knows only the basics of it up to now.

It is necessary to reduce the effort and speed of both information inputs in order to develop the kinesthetic sense refinement.(WEBER-FECHNER LAW)

This is the learning context to build the Praxia (Mind representation), which translated into Bio-cybernetic language is illustrative: Neuro-motor assemblage of pre-established programs.(HABITS) 


It is crucial for the Feldenkrais Method that each detail of neuromotor action is a consequence of a pre-coordinated gesture. Movement as a time/spatial displacement is just the visible manifestation of this previous process, which we can have access to through imagination.

This highly potential resource was researched by Evarts and Fromm, who proved that Motor Cortex Nervous were strongly modulated using the minimum amount of voluntary muscular activity.


Likewise, the preparation for an action provokes an increase of the blood irrigation in the cortical motor areas related to that action. The neuro-Muscular activity adapts to the intention.   


By using IMAGINATION, the Motor Cortex can establish new patterns with muscles conditioned by automatisms.


The neurophysiologic base for learning process is based on the “ Plastic properties of the Nervous System “, studied by Konorski. They manifest functionally in the formation and multiplication of new synaptic connections in the superior structures.(REWIRING)


The main change doesn’t occur in the primary receptors. It is a biologically placed in nervous paths, in their central interlacing, and in the complex mechanisms that receive and integrate the information from the receptors.
