Foundations in Education Theory Examples

A paper that explores my philosophy of teaching defined by some major schools of thought in education philosophy. This paper names specific ways I teach and does not just repeat theories.

Fourth Grade Technology Unit made in the Understanding By Design Model, by Grant and Wiggins where one addresses core goals, makes assessments first, then plans according to these targets.
ILP UbD 4th grade Tech.doc

A unit that could be used for 6th, 7th or 8th grade in the method of "Understanding by Design". This template outlines unpacking content standards, lists of skills taught, assessment methods for a unit that incorporates many technology tools.
UbD Template 2.0 for multiple tech tools unit.doc

An assessment of the Understanding by Design unit posted earlier. In the UbD process, after "unpacking" core elements of standards taught, one makes the assessment first. This is so teaching can be focused towards specific lessons that stay on track with the design.
research assessment 8th UbD.doc

Another Understanding by Design template. This one is for 4th through 8th grade and addresses the challenge of teaching Internet research and writing from Internet sources.

A written exploration of potential best practices for teaching basic computer skills to adults. This paper explores this topic applying research from the field of Andragogy.

Learning and Human Development Examples

This writing is a review of the major milestones of my life. It is a narrative written for the express purpose of having an experience as a student of adult education to prepare for being a teacher of adults. This experience was aimed at incorporating reflections on life as a way to teach adults in a method that seeks to connect the student with immediate life purpose.

A sample of a research project assigned to the 8th grade 4/2009. Students were assigned to make mock 'MySpace' pages on historic figures by researching their life and creating a technology product that teaches about their assigned person. This one was on Mao Zedong. This assignment attempted to get students to see the human side of historical figures. The assignment also used a familiar social networking venue as the inspiration to get students to create an project that demands evaluation type learning with relevance to their personal lives.

This image is a student sample of using a paint program to make a simple drawing, then engage in writing. Using the modality of drawing with writing aids comprehension and enhances writing skills. Students feel connected to visually appealing projects which then promote confidence.

Teaching Understanding of Technology Examples
My Class blog that I use to give directions on a lot of assignments in my 5-8th grade computer classes. We use images, presentations, spreadsheets, voice recording tools and more from the blog itself. It is an excellent way to distribute files and documents as well as written directions for the students.

These documents are the outline of my class scope and sequence I used for 2007-08 and 2008-09. This first 7th/8th grade technology scope and sequence (outlines of teaching objectives and methods) used for my middle school computer classes attempted to use technology as tools of problem solving and inquiry. I am rewriting these to include newer perspectives on new literacies. I want to integrate more 'web 2.0' tools with core class curriculum using technology.

An example of how I used a wiki page to teach a research assignment where all the students could not only learn how to use a wiki page, but share each other's links and research. Those who need a more "social" modality connect to assignments this way.
