    Bronze medallion of John Trumbull (1756-1843), painter, by Charles Cushing Wright, die engraver, obverse after a design by Robert Ball Hughes, 1849. The image above is from the  Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Online Collection Ref. NPG.84.78.  The artwork itself is in the public domain because of its age.  This image was produced by the United States Government and hence is also in the public domain.  There is a different image at The Collection of the National Gallery of Art and at the Yale University Art Gallery eCatalogue.

    The bronze medallion is 2 1/2 in. diameter.  It was designed for the American Art-Union.  The die engraver was Charles Cushing Wright (1796-1854), a founder of the National Academy of Design.  See Medal Collectors of America for more information.
