Mapping the art scene in Sharjah and the UAE

Exhibition 8/6/2011 - 6/8/2011 &

Workshop 8/6/2011 -21/6/2011

at Maraya Art Center at Al Qasba, Sharjah, UAE

The first conversation I had with Christos Savvidis took place about eight months ago via Skype. He briefly presented his vision for the Roaming Images project, and his desire to create a path that linked East and the West in an intellectual and genuine manner. I immediately felt a connection with his vision and we started brainstorming ideas on how the project could be adapted to involve artists and intellectuals from the UAE.
The general response from artists has been overwhelmingly positive, and the American University of Sharjah’s strong involvement has been extremely beneficial. Sotirios Bahtsetzis also made a lasting impact with his three day workshop.
Since part of the Maraya Art Centre’s vision is to create a bridge between local and international institutions and organizations, and to serve as a platform for international exchange, we have worked very hard to enable all parties to create and define solid structures and foundations for a longstanding collaboration.
I believe that, without the full participation and co-operation of the various institutions, projects such as this would not be possible. We all need to work together in order to achieve bigger goals.
