2011 Motorcycle Safety Course

BRC – Beginner Rider’s Course

ERC – Experienced Rider’s Course

MSRC – Military Sport Bike Rider's Course

Do you know the rules and regulations for operating a Motorcycle?

Do you want to learn to ride a motorcycle?

The following information provides important information regarding operating a motorcycle.

The requirements for motorcycle operations apply to:

  • Active Duty Military – 24X7 – on-duty – off duty – on any DOD installation or off!
  • DOD Civilians – Only when the motorcycle is operated on a DOD installation and off the installation if the individual is in a duty status!
  • All Others - Only when the motorcycle is operated on the installation.

Requirements:

  • License:  Must be properly licensed to operate a motorcycle in Virginia or the Active Duty Member’s Home of Record. Requirements vary state to state.  Contact the PMO or the 633 ABW Safety Offices to determine requirements for your home of record (military only).  Personnel licensed in the State of Virginia must have a valid Driver’s License with a Class “M” endorsement.
  • Motorcycle Safety Course

o   Required for all motorcycle operators.

o   One time requirement.  Either the “Basic (Beginner) Motorcycle Course” or the “Experienced Motorcycle Course” meets the requirement.

o   Passing the DMV licensing requirements for issuance of a motorcycle endorsement (written test and road skills evaluation) does not meet this requirement.

Several Motorcycle Courses will be offered at Fort Eustis in 2011:

Beginner Riders Course (BRC).  Everyone should begin with the basics.  If you want to purchase a motorcycle but don’t know how to ride, this is the course for you.  This is a 2-day (3-day during summer months) beginner’s course that actually teaches you to ride and it provides the motorcycle and the helmet.  You will still need to wear the proper PPE during the riding portion of this course (see below for PPE).

Military Sport bike Riders Course (MSRC):  This course is for individuals who own and ride a SPORT BIKE.  You must be a properly licensed rider, have completed the BRC, have your own motorcycle (no borrowed bikes allowed and proof of ownership), valid state inspection, registration and proper insurance.

Experienced Riders Course (ERC):  This course is for experienced riders who own a motorcycle and have completed the Beginners Riders Course (BRC).  You must be a properly licensed rider, have your own motorcycle (no borrowed bikes allowed and proof of ownership), valid state inspection, registration and proper insurance.  It is a pass or fail course.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):  The following clothing and equipment must be worn at all times when operating a motorcycle:

o   DOT-certified motorcycle helmet (Snell is a civilian certification that meets/exceeds DOT certification).

o   Full fingered gloves designed for motorcycle operation.

o   Long sleeved upper garment.

o   Long pants.

o   Sturdy, over-the-ankle boots with a heel.

o   Eye protection – goggles, shatter resistance glasses or helmet face shield.  Fairing windshield does not meet requirement

o   Day light operation – Brightly covered upper garment or reflective material (vest) worn over all other garments.  May be worn over military uniforms while operating motorcycle.

o   Night Operation – Reflective material (vest) worn over all other garments.  May be worn over military uniforms while operating motorcycle.

Course Scheduling:  To schedule yourself for a course you must register through the Air Force Joint Bases Motorcycle Training:  www.militarysafepmv.com   please complete all required information.

Space is limited in all classes – only 12 confirmed students per class.  The courses begin in March 2011 and run through September 2011.  Check the AIRs system for dates and availability.  Courses are held at the 633 ABW Ground Safety Office, 2794 Harrison Loop, Fort Eustis, VA.  For additional information contact the 633 ABW Ground Safety Office, 878-3740 x222.

Please call the Safety Office, 878-3740, to register.

UPDATE:

If you are interested in a Sport Bike Course (SBC), there will be some offered in 2009.   However, the SBC requires you have your own sport bike for the course.  The SBC will be about an 8am - 5pm course (with the possibility of ending early).

Classes will no longer be offered early for the entire year, they will be offered 3 months in advance. This will help prevent people registering in Jan for an Aug course and forgetting about it - thereby leaving an vacant seat in a class.
