Bio
Roomet Jakapi is an Estonian experimental vocalist, known for exploring the possibilities of the human voice through extended techniques and free improvisation. He has collaborated with numerous distinguished improvising musicians, including Chris Pitsiokos, Fred Frith, Rieko Okuda, Antti Virtaranta, Guilherme Rodrigues, Emilio Gordoa, Beat Keller, Jerzy Mazzoll, Sławek Janicki, Kris Kuldkepp, Girilal Baars, Roman Stolyar, Elo Masing, Jukka Kääriäinen, Dario Fariello, Oleksii Lupashko, Taavi Kerikmäe, Mart Soo, Theodore Parker, Ilia Belorukov, Lauri Hyvärinen, and many others. He has performed at festivals and venues in the Baltic and Nordic countries, as well as Poland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Russia, and the UK.
In a concert review for the magazine Jazzwise, Martin Longley described him as a "highly alternative Bobby McFerrin being."
Roomet is a member of the bands Punkt Nihu, Impromachine4000, Rooluulend, and Kreatiivmootor. He has collaborated and recorded with musicians and groups from various genres, such as Gintas K and Taavi Tulev (experimental electronics), Phlox (jazz rock), Fuzzolini (noise rock), and EDASI (black noise). He has also worked with composers like Age Veeroos, Andrus Kallastu and Ville Vokkolainen, as well as contemporary music groups like Ensemble U: and Repoo Ensemble.
As a soloist and collaborator, he has released music on labels such as Art First Records (Finland), Rinnzekete Recordings (Sweden), Powdered Hearts (USA), Improtest Records (Estonia), and Shorty Music V Poiskah DoDo & Friends (Ukraine).
Roomet has collaborated with poets such as Jaan *Luulur* Malin, Hasso Krull, fs, Piret Põldver and J.P. Sipilä, as well as visual and multimedia artists including Liina Siib, Mihkel Kleis, Eva Labotkin, Tanel Rander, and Maarja Nurk. He has also worked with dancers and choreographers like Külli Roosna, Kenneth Flak, Indrek Kornel, Katrīna Stepiņa, Mareeta Ojasaar, Kristin Tagam, Maria Solei Järvet, and Kaspar Aus.
Roomet appears in the feature film "Sandra Gets A Job," directed by Kaupo Kruusiauk (Kopli Kinokompanii, 2021), as well as in the documentaries "Impromptu," directed by Priit Pääsuke and Mart Taniel (Luxfilm, 2015), and "Luulur," directed by Raivo Kelomees (Kopli Kinokompanii, 2025). His voice is featured in the documentary "The Woman Who Takes Up Little Space," directed by Indrek Spungin (Menufilmid, 2025). In May 2025, Roomet and Indrek Kornel released their short experimental dance film "Shame Shame."
Roomet is the author or co-author of four books on topics ranging from philosophy to bureaucracy.
He is an Associate Professor of History of Philosophy at the University of Tartu.
