RIGiM Panel

The use of intentional concepts, the notion of "goal" in particular, has been a significant thread in conceptual modeling in recent years, particularly in relation to requirements engineering. Recent work has examined conceptual modeling issues in goal/intention modeling (GIM), on topics such as goal model semantics, ontological foundations, visualization, analysis, domain-specific applications, and combination with other conceptual modeling languages. Several tracks and workshops in the ER conference, including the RIGiM workshop (Requirements, Intentions, and Goals in Conceptual Modeling), have focused on aspects of applying conceptual modeling foundations to goal-oriented approaches. In view of current research advances, including industrial experiences, this is an appropriate time to reflect on the status of the research on GIM topics. In particular, this panel will focus on open research questions and future directions. Panelists will be asked to reflect on research issues, questions and topics that arise from their experiences in goal/intention modeling, especially as seen through the lens of conceptual modeling.  Discussion will focus on building a consensus concerning the major challenges which remain in the area, mapping out a research agenda.  Focus will be placed on the relationships or dependencies between topics, making the significance of each topic visible.  The produced map can be updated each year, in future instances of the panel or the RIGiM workshop, marking progress and uncovering further emerging challenges.
