The Songwriting Journey:

Growing up in a Southeast Texas blue-collar family that shared a love for music and made music a part of their everyday life. His mother talked about the hard times that she and his father had endured while living through the Great Depression of the 1930's and how music helped a soul forget hard things. His mother was a natural musician learning to play most string instruments by ear. Before she got married, his mother played in a band with her three brothers at Saturday night hoedowns in Polk County in Southeast Texas. Some of his songwriting reflects his heritage of those five generations of Texans dating back before the Civil War.

Rickey Gene got his first guitar when he was eight years old from the neighborhood drug store in his hometown of Pasadena Texas and learned to play by watching his mother play and sing hymns and old country tunes. He sang at church when he was growing up and that's where he fell in love with the rich harmonies that gospel hymns bring to the table.

When he started singing his original songs in public he decided to not travel on the road with a band or move away from his home state of Texas. It was about that time that he and his high school sweetheart (Vickie Cabrera) moved to Dallas and started their family and they were blessed with three daughters. He began to sing at the Country Opry Shows in Texas and Oklahoma and wound up working for the Mesquite Opry in North Texas as the stage band leader and he auditioned all the potential guest singers. While at the Mesquite Opry he wrote the Americana song "Frank & Jesse James". It was this song that moved Rickey Gene to get serious about registering and recording his songs. Years later he received a phone call one night from a former Mesquite Opry band member who said they had been playing his song "Frank & Jesse James" for years in bands around Nashville and he should get this song registered with BMI or ASCAP and so he did.
