Michael A. Wells

The Accountant

The accountant in him
would pad his failing memory;
would caulk empty periods
or back fill them with misappropriations.
His three children became five.
Three visited him often.
He was bitter
the other two were
never around.

His second wife
was missing from his mind,
he could recall wife one
and wife three but not in that order.

He wandered through his house
searching for a room of twenty years ago-
when he lived in upstate New York.

It wasn't a bad life.
Difficult for others
but to himself,
he was just fine.
