This site will be updated with research opportunities in physics and related fields away from Rhodes College. If you are interested in the research that goes on in the Physics Department at Rhodes College, please see this website:
SPS National has a great site for searching for summer research internships:
The full list of National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) can be found here:
And the REUs specific to physics can be found here:
An email from Ronald Gamble, Cosmic Origins Research Scientist at University of Maryland and NASA:
Greetings Cosmic Origins Community!
Last Call for Summer Internships!
The deadline for NASA internships during summer 2026 is fast approaching and will be here on February 27th! We have compiled an extensive listing of the latest information on astrophysics-related summer internships offered below! All links provided below will take you the corresponding internship opportunity on the master list (https://stemgateway.nasa.gov/public/s/explore-opportunities). We found them for you! From the University of Alabama Birmingham College of Arts and Sciences:
We are now recruiting for our National Science Foundation (NSF) supported Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in "Experimental and Computational Materials Research.” The program takes place May 17 through July 24, 2026. Our program is among the longest running NSF REU programs in the country. We offer a broad range of interdisciplinary materials research experiences to undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds in physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, applied mathematics, and engineering.
NSF Division of Materials Research (DMR) supported Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is inviting applications for the Summer 2026 program. REU-projects are available in five research clusters: (1) computational materials research/machine learning (2) materials under extreme conditions (3) materials for energy applications, (4) materials for sensors and laser applications, and (5) biomaterials for implants, tissue engineering and drug delivery applications. This is an in-person research model.
The undergraduates will conduct the analysis of data generated in their research projects and make presentations on completed research to faculty mentors and other undergraduates taking part in this program. We require all REUs to take part in a campus-wide expo at the end of the program.
The program will offer 10-weeks of research from May 17, 2026 - July 24, 2026. The program will pay $7,000 over the entire 10-week period involving 400 hours of research with a faculty mentor at UAB (based on a 40-hour work week).
For program information and application questions contact Program Coordinator Charita Cadenhead (charita@uab.edu).
The application will be available online December 1, 2025, through midnight April 10, 2026.

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a unique opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students to advance their education and jumpstart their careers. SMART provides merit-based scholarships to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students pursuing STEM degrees. SMART scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, summer internships, and after graduation, civilian employment with the Department of Defense. Applications are open annually from August 1 to the first Friday in December. Check your eligibility now to see if you qualify and take the first step toward a successful future in STEM.
Caltech recognizes that differences of perspective, experience, and thought is essential to achieving and maintaining scientific excellence. The WAVE Fellows program supports this goal by increasing visibility and accessibility to our PhD programs to undergraduates in STEM fields who are seriously considering attending graduate school. .
WAVE Fellows is a 10-week undergraduate research program that provides robust programming in the areas of academic and professional development.
Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or students with DACA status. A minimum GPA of 3.4 is required.
Competitive applicants will have completed sophomore-level courses in desired research field, have demonstrated through academic and/or co-curricular activities a passion for research, and can articulate how their interests align with Caltech's research areas. The most competitive applicants will have prior research experience.
The WAVE Fellows program is open to anyone regardless of race, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual identity, and/or any other protected characteristic.
Support: WAVE Fellows will receive a $6,000 award for the 10-week period, plus campus housing, and a dining and travel supplement of ~$1,000.
Application: Online applications are due January 9, 2026.
Program information sessions will be held throughout November. Register now!

On Saturday, October 4, 2025, Caltech will host our 6th annual virtual FUTURE Ignited program.
Caltech recognizes that the diversity of background, experience, and thought is essential to achieving and maintaining scientific excellence. The FUTURE Ignited program is designed to support and encourage aspiring graduate students by providing the opportunity to learn more about graduate programs at Caltech and, more broadly, the graduate school admissions process.
This program is for students who are interested in pursuing a PhD in the next 1-2 years. This includes rising juniors and seniors and post-baccalaureate students. Students should have an interest in one of the graduate school options offered at Caltech.
Student-Faculty Programs are open to anyone regardless of race, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual identity, and/or any other protected characteristic.
Interested students should register by September 24, 2025.
From the St Jude Partner Programs Liaison: "We are no longer able to allow juniors (rising seniors) into the St Jude Summer Plus program since their second research summer happens after graduation. This means that we will be accepting more students from earlier years (rising sophomores and juniors) into the St Jude program."
