REGIONAL FEED CHEMICAL ANALYSIS LABORATORY

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Feed quality control is defined as a system of verifying and maintaining a desired level of quality in feeds. It involves careful planning, use of proper equipment, continued inspection and corrective measures if necessary.

The Animal Feed Laboratory was established under Republic Act 1556, which is also known as Livestock and Poultry Feeds Act. This act aims to regulate and control the manufacture, importation, labeling, advertising and sale of livestock and poultry feeds manufactured throughout the Philippines.

For Region 3, the Regional Feed Chemical Analysis Laboratory is a unit under the Integrated Laboratories Services Division of the Department of Agriculture, Regional Field Office 3.

 

OBJECTIVES

  1. Formulate plans and programs for the efficient operation of the unit in accordance with the thrusts and policies of the Department of Agriculture, specifically food security and higher income of farmers;
  2. Follow laboratory standards, procedures and techniques in the analysis of feeds and feedstuffs that are vital for food supply and quality;
  3. Provide services to support quality production among animal raisers and give recommendations;
  4. Provide services to support regulatory functions of monitoring feed millers and retailers in compliance to feed quality standards;
  5. Provide services to researchers who engage in searching feed additives and substitutes, new feed formulations and organic farming.

 

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

The following are the services being offered by the Regional Feed Chemical Analysis Laboratory.

A.     Chemical Analysis Sub-Unit

 

B.     Mycotoxin Sub-Unit

      • performs Aflatoxin tests on corn, feeds, and other feedstuffs if they meet quality standard.

 

C.      Feed Microscopy Sub-Unit

      • determines presence of adulterants in raw materials.
