Just like other fields such as real estate and stock market, the field of democracy today is being controlled by cartels - unholy alliances of political parties who have formed different groups (Congress-led United Progressive Alliance and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led opposition alliance) solely for the purpose of gaining control for an administrative term and then looting the nation of its coffers. As such today’s system can be best described as rule by a mafia of corrupt politicians. Though India boasts of the most populous democracy in the world, the democratic system as it stands today has completely failed the common man in India. Our political parties have completely distorted the form and function of democracy into a farce and a technique to fool the people and enjoy the lion's share of fruits of development by a select band of people. There is an urgent need to save democracy from the misuse of professional politicians. I would recommend to the readers the brilliant blog post by Rajesh Kalra dated 16 February 2011 entitled Scams, not the media, have damaged India's image, Mr Prime Minister and the large number of comments, in which everyone is wallowing in self pity and condemns the rotten democratic process that has placed the Congress-led coalition at the center.
