Colloquium for undergraduates on Free Market Environmentalism

PERC is pleased to announce a co-sponsored program with Liberty Fund, Inc. for distinguished undergraduate students. PERC will provide a full scholarship to cover tuition, meals, lodging, and a stipend of $500 for each student's travel expenses. The colloquium is limited to 24 students and the application process is competitive.

The program is designed to introduce students to a property rights and market approach to environmental issues. An understanding of these approaches will be invaluable to anyone who cares about the environment; particularly those who will choose career paths that include environmental law, public policy, economics, and teaching environmental science.

A theoretical framework about liberty and markets will be presented. Experts in the field will then demonstrate applications.

This colloquium begins with an opening dinner on Monday evening and concludes with a closing dinner Friday evening. The daily schedule consists of two sessions each morning and two sessions each afternoon. The colloquium is a combination of lectures and Socratic style discussions of assigned readings of about 300 pages that address specific themes.

Complete the on-line application, which will require the following:
  • One-page essay detailing:
  • your reasons for wanting to attend this colloquium;
  • your career plans; and
  • how participation in the colloquium will advance your academic and career plans.
  • A copy of your college transcript.
  • Two letters of recommendation from two professors(can be submitted under separate cover).

Who should apply?
  • College students with junior or senior standing who are interested in learning how markets work to improve the environment.
  • A limited number of openings are available for law students and graduate students.
  • Participants will be chosen on the basis of demonstrated academic performance, essay responses, and letters of recommendation.
