REpublican Club of Frederick County February Meeting
Thursday, February 21, 2019 @ 6:30pm
Our February meeting will be concentrating on the current state of public education in Frederick County and will feature Marla Migdal, the founder of the Frederick County Chapter of Decoding Dyslexia and Tom Neumark, the founding President of the Frederick Classical Charter School.
Marla Migdal is an Educational Consultant and former Special Education teacher, who focuses on education and advocating for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia at the state and local level. Marla started the Frederick Chapter of Decoding Dyslexia, a branch of Decoding Dyslexia Maryland. When Marla was in the process to help her own children with dyslexia, she found systemic issues in the local school system due to lack of identification, failure to make progress, and the absence of appropriate science based reading programs. Marla, an Orton Gillingham tutor, is studying to be a certified Therapist through the International Dyslexia Association while simultaneously working on her Dyslexia Studies Graduate Certificate through Notre Dame. Marla’s goal is to change the current “wait to fail” model and reform reading practices to be based on the science of learning.
Tom Neumark will present on the current state of American Education, what is wrong with it, and what Republicans (and Democrats) can do about it. Mr. Neumark is the founding President of Frederick Classical Charter School. He writes an education column for the Frederick News Post and has been a visiting fellow for the Maryland Public Policy Institute. He has spent nearly twenty years pursuing education reform and lives in Frederick County, MD. He currently works in the technology field.
