Coaching Staff

Aaron Filieo, 1st Year (2019)
Head Coach
Coach Filieo was hired to lead the Red Riots football program in December 2018 and is entering his 16th season as a head coach - the last 15 years at Cape Elizabeth.  Prior to coaching in Cape, he served as an assistant football coach at his alma mater, South Portland High School, from 1997-2002.  As a player at SP, Coach Filieo, a captain and All-State nose guard, helped lead his undefeated team to a state championship in 1992.  He currently teaches 7th grade at Cape Elizabeth Middle School and resides in South Portland with his wife Kari and three children.

Jason Cooke, 14th Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Backs)
In 2016, Coach Cooke was recognized as the Guy Lajeunesse Assistant Coach of the Year in the SMAA.  A South Portland alum, Coach Cooke was a Red Riot captain and All-Conference performer.  As the South Portland quarterback, he led the Riots to a 24-0 record and two consecutive Class A State Championships.  He started his college career as a two-sport athlete playing football and baseball at the University of Rhode Island where he finished his career with the Rams baseball program.  He also has coached baseball at SPHs for the past 13 seasons and works as the head groundskeeper for the Portland Sea Dogs.  He resides in South Portland with his wife Natasha and their son.

Rob Kierstead, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers, Running Backs)
Coach Kierstead previously coached for the Red Riots from 2003-2010.  Since 2010 he has coach in South Portland's youth football program.  He also served as the defensive coordinator for Deering High School in 2013-14, player/coach for the NEFL Maine Sabers 2013 and Raging Bulls 2015-16.  Coach Kierstead is a former Red Riot captain where he led the defense to two State Championships and a then state record 31 consecutive wins.  While at South Portland he was two-time All-Conference, two-time All-State and Fitzpatrick Trophy finalist.  He was a four-year letter winner and three-year starter for the University of Maine where he helped lead the Black Bears to the 2001 and 2002 Atlantic 10 titles and NCAA playoffs.  Coach Kierstead earned the Woody Carville Senior Achievement Award in 2002.  He resides with his wife Jess and their four children.

Jim Clark, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Special Teams Coordinator, Operations Director)
Coach Clark begins his fourth season working on Coach Filieo's staff. He played Division III football for NCAA champion Whittenberg in Ohio and, after graduation, spent three years coaching varsity football at St. Albans School for Boys in Washington DC.  He resides in Cape Elizabeth with his wife Ann and have two adult daughters.

Ryan Piper, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Quarterbacks)
Coach Piper is entering his 14th year as a quarterbacks coach.  Under his tutelage, Cape Elizabeth produces some of the states' best quarterbacks over the past decade.  As a senior quarterback, he was a team captain and Fitzpatrick Trophy semi-finalist at South Portland High School in 1998.  He resides in South Portland with his wife Heather and their son.

Nate Davis, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Wide Receivers)
Coach Davis is entering his fourth year working with Coach Filieo.  He gets his discipline from his time spent in the US Navy and playing at SPHS in the late 90's.  He was a West All-conference wide receiver in 1997, and was a two-way starter on the 1996 undefeated SP State Championship team.  He picked up his other State Championship ring as a sophomore in 1995, where he contributed to a memorable Western Maine Championship.  He resides in South Portland and works as a plumber/heat/AC technician.

Jemal Murph, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Defensive Line)
Coach Murphy graduated from the University of Maine where he played linebacker for the Black Bears for four years.  He has coached football at Orono Hs, Falmouth HS, Deering HS and in the PYFL.  He is a physical education teacher in Portland.

Ron Kierstead, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Junior Varsity)
Coach Kierstead attended South Portland High School from 1982-1985 where he was a captain of the football and basketball teams.  He coached football for 19 years in SP and coached 12 years at Cape.  He has previously coached JV and 1st team girls basketball at Deering.  He resides in Buxton with his wife Karen and their two sons.

Tony Napolitano, 3rd Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Junior Varsity)
Coach Napolitano attended the United State Military Academy at West Point and has a B.S. in Environmental Science.  He has served as the head wrestling coach for the Portland/South Portland team since 2002, as well as, coaching South Portland youth football.  He resides in South Portland with his wife Jennifer and their two children.

Kevin Millington, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Offensive Quality Control)
Coach Millington returns to SP football where he served as an assistant coach on the 1996 Red Riots State Championship team.  After that season, he ws named the varsity basketball coach at Windham HS where he coached from 1997-2015.  In addition to basketball at Windham,, he was also named the first ever head varsity football coach in 1999 and served in that capacity for three season.  After sitting out on season, he rejoined the Eagle staff as an assistant coach from 2003-2013.  In 2015, he returned to his hometown to coach the varsity basketball team at SP.  He resides in South Portland with his wife Susan and their son.

Nate Rende, 3rd Season (2019)
Assistant Coach (Defensive Quality Control)
Coach Rende is a graduate of Husson College and Thomas College.  He has served as an assistant coach at Cony HS, Waterville HS and Boothbay HS.  He currently teaches math at Old Orchard HS and resides in South Portland with his wife Suzanne and has five children.

Chris Mims, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Coach (Technology Coordinator)
Coach Mims begins his 11th season work on Coach Filieo's staff, where he has coaches just about every position other than quarterback.  Coach Mims was awarded the Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016 while at Cape.  He is also a South Portland football alum who played on two State Championship teams.  he resides in Scarborough with his wife Lisa and their two children.

Steve Booth, 1st Year (2019)
Strength & Conditioning Coach
Coach Booth grew up in Portland playing football, basketball and baseball graduating from Cheverus HS.  From there powerlifting and bodybuilding led to a Mr. Maine title in 1993.  He studied under the world famous Mike Boyle of Woburn, MA and is certified through his teachings as a Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC).  For the past five years he has been working at Booth Strength and Power with local middle, high school and collegiate athletes to enhance mobility, durability, strength and speed.  He resides in Scarborough with his wife Marci and their four daughters.

Jason Perry, 1st Year (2019)
Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach
Coach Perry has previously coach youth baseball.  He played football under Coach Art Greenlaw at Stearns HS in the 1980's/. He spent 12 years in the US Military and is a career firefighter/paramedic (17 years) serving as a lieutenant at South Portland Ladder 45.  He holds certifications from the American Council on Exercise as a personal trainer and firefighter peer fitness trainer with specialty certifications in strength and conditioning and functional fitness.  He also holds a certification from American Kettlebell Club earned through Kettlebell New York coach Mike Stefano.
