Explore the int
imate, poetic side of Richard Wagner, whose Wesendonk Songs, based on texts by his great love Mathilde Wesendonk, are among the most moving works for voice and piano ever composed. The concert features the rarely heard Piano Sonata No. 1, written when Wagner was in his twenties but already experiencing the new harmonies that would characterize his later operas.

          Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for museum members, and $5 for students with valid IDs. Tickets are sold on the day of the concert on a first-come, first-serve basis, beginning at 12:30pm

Opera at Van Vleck House & Gardens Van Vleck House & Gardens is pleased to partner with State Repertory Opera of New Jersey, to present a new musical series for 2010, Sunday Afternoon at the Opera.

The final performance, Sunday, September 19th from 3:00-4:00pm, will be “Opera à la Carte” featuring mezzo soprano Katy Sumrow accompanied by SRO Artistic Director Dita Delman. You can sample the "menu" here.

Ms. Sumrow is a graduate of the esteemed Chopin School of music in Warsaw. She is a founding member of the Baroque ensemble Buccina Cantorum, has recorded a CD entitled Music of the Italian Baroque, and has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir including the Polish Requiem conducted by Leonard Bernstein. A member of the State Repertory Opera of New Jersey for the past four years, Ms. Sumrow has impressed audiences in productions of Don Pasquale and Il Travotore, among many others. Ms. Sunrow will be performing from an “à la carte menu” with the audience making the selections.

On her website Ms. Sumrow writes, “I'm singing to make people happy, but also to help people think about their own lives and their own journey”.

New Jersey's State Repertory Opera has been bringing opera performances to New Jersey audiences since 1975, providing quality performers and young singers an opportunity to reach new and established music audiences. SRO has presented fully staged and concert performances ranging from the popular repertory Madame Butterfly and Marriage of Figaro, to the rare and unfamiliar.

Seating is limited and reservations are recommended. A suggested donation of $10 per person is requested. All proceeds go towards the care and maintenance of the Van Vleck House & Gardens. Doors open at 2:30pm

Katy Sumrow Granieri, accompanied by renowned pianist Mary Pinto, will perform seldom-heard Polish art songs, including works by Karol Szymanowski, Stanislaw Moniuszko, Mieczyslaw Karlowicz and Frédéric Chopin. Ms. Sumrow was born in Gdansk, Poland, and is a graduate of the esteemed Chopin School of Music in Warsaw. She has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir (including the Polish Requiem under the baton of Leonard Bernstein) and is a founding member of the Baroque ensemble Buccina Cantorum and has recorded aCD Music of the Italian Baroque. Over the last four years, Ms. Sumrow has been a member of the State Repertory Opera of New Jersey and performed in productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Il Trovatore, Elisir D'Amore and Don Pasquale.

By car: Take the NJ Turnpike to exit 9. Follow signs for "Route 18 North, New Brunswick" for approximately 3 mi. Follow large overhead green sign that reads "George Street, Rutgers University, exit 1/2 mile". At exit light (George Street) turn left. Go to the next light at Hamilton Street. Museum is on the corner.
Museum Hours:

Tuesday - Friday: 10:00am-4:30pm
Weekends: Noon-5:00pm
Closed: Mondays; all year, Tuesdays in July. Closed month of August.
Holidays: Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Thursday & Friday, December 25, January 1
Admission:
$3.00 per person for adults who are not members of the museum. Entrance to the museum is free at all times for members, all children under 18, and Rutgers University students, faculty, and staff with a valid I.D. In addition, the first Sunday of each month will be free to all.
Parking:
Monday - Friday: Limited parking available by Kirkpatrick Chapel (entrance at George and Somerset St.) Metered parking on street.
Saturday - Sunday: Free parking on street and in lots marked with P

“Art Songs of Poland, Love Songs for You“

Opera at Van Vleck House & Gardens, 2/14
Van Vleck House & Gardens, in partnership with State Repertory Opera of New Jersey, will present a new musical series for 2010, Sunday Afternoon at the Opera. The first performance, scheduled for Sunday, February 14 from 2-4 p.m., will be “Art Songs of Poland, Love Songs for You,“ featuring mezzo soprano Katy Sumrow accompanied by SRO Artistic Director Dita Delman on the baby grand piano at Van Vleck House & Gardens. Seating is limited and reservations are required. A suggested donation of $10 per person is requested. Katy Sumrow, accompanied by renowned pianist Mary Pinto, will perform seldom-heard Polish art songs, including works by Karol Szymanowski, Stanislaw Moniuszko, Mieczyslaw Karlowicz and Frédéric Chopin. Ms. Sumrow was born in Gdansk, Poland, and is a graduate of the esteemed Chopin School of Music in Warsaw. She has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir (including the Polish Requiem under the baton of Leonard Bernstein) and is a founding member of the Baroque ensemble Buccina Cantorum and has recorded aCD Music of the Italian Baroque. Over the last four years, Ms. Sumrow has been a member of the State Repertory Opera of New Jersey and performed in productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Il Trovatore, Elisir D'Amore and Don Pasquale.

Recital/Concert with Reception

Katy Sumrow (Mezzo-Soprano) and Melissa Manning (Pianist), present:

"OVER THE RAINBOW" - A program of Operatic Arias and Art Songs featuring pieces by Mozart, Wagner, Verdi, Chopin, as well as popular Show Tunes by American Composer Harold Arlen

Introduction by Dita Delman, artistic director of the State Repertory Opera of New Jersey.

 

Katy Sumrow was born in Gdansk, Poland. At an early age, she received a full music scholarship to the Chopin School of Music. Upon graduating she signed a contract with the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and toured through Spain and Germany. Ms. Sumrow performed in the Polish Requiem with Leonard Bernstein and Liv Ullman at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw on International television. Her repertoires as a Soloist include Baroque, Opera, Jazz, Spiritual and Broadway.

Ms. Sumrow is a founding member of the "Baroque Ensemble Buccina Cantorum" and has recently recorded a CD "Music of the Italian Baroque".

Over the last four years, she's been a member of the State Repertory Opera of New Jersey and performed in productions of "Lucia di Lammermoor", "Il Trovatore", "Elisir D'Amore" and "Don Pasquale". Upcoming is a fundraiser performance "Love, Lust, Murder... and we call it Opera" on March 30th and Gala Concert on April 27th.

Other upcoming performances are Maddalena in "Rigoletto" with Operesque in NYC in April, and Nyack Opera Night Mother's Day Concert on May 11th.

Melissa  Manning

Melissa Manning, Founder and Director of The Manning School of Music in Nyack, NY, is a Juilliard trained concert pianist. She is a first generation Ukrainian-American and received her initial music training at the Ukrainian Music Institute in Irvington, NJ.

Melissa was the recipient of numerous scholarships including those from The Miss America Scholarship Foundation. She was chosen first runner up to Vanessa Williams, Miss America, and was crowned Miss New York State. Melissa has produced the Opera Night Concert programs in Rockland County since April 2006, accompanying a variety of operatic singers including sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors and baritones. Katy Sumrow has worked with Melissa Manning for the past one and a half years.
