Lent 2019

Lent is a time of renewal for we who follow Jesus.  It is an opportunity to gather together and reflect on who we are, who we follow, at the invitation of the One who claims us.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, March 6. The ashes we receive are a sign of who we are:  creatures who are no more than ashes without the redeeming grace of Jesus.  Lent lasts 40 days — from the acknowledgement of our dependence on God on Ash Wednesday right up to Easter, the Day of Resurrection.  We are a new creation in Christ Jesus!

So what do we do for those 40 days?

We invite you to be strengthened in faith through this year’s Lenten program, Reflection & Renewal.  This program is centered around a common daily devotional (see below), and it offers opportunities to engage with others the questions that your reading, living, and praying may have raised during the week.

The book we will be working with is Lent for Everyone, by N.T. Wright. It is a gentle guide through the Lenten season, with a Bible reading, a brief reflection, and prayer, each day. Each day’s reflection is written to help us ponder how the text is relevant to our lives, and perhaps raise questions or comments to share at the Renewal Group meeting.

Participation in the renewal groups is encouraged but optional!  You are welcome to participate at your own pace.  “Renewal groups” will meet weekly during Lent at the following times:

·         Sunday mornings, 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM (beginning March 10)

·         Wednesday evenings, 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM (beginning March 13)

·         Thursdays, 11:30 AM lunch group, with prayer and conversation from 12 noon to 1:00 PM (beginning March 7).

Copies of Lent for Everyone are available from the church office. Suggested donation is $10 each.  Contact the church office to reserve your copy!
