Ninth Annual Family Retreat: August 1-3, 2017

a retreat to refresh, educate, and encourage Christian families

In Peace and Joy

We confess that when members of our congregations are removed from us and to God’s nearer presence that they still remain with us as members of a single body. This year’s retreat will focus on the implications of that statement for congregations and pastors as they care for the departed and those who mourn for them. In two plenary sessions Pastor David Petersen will deal directly with several doctrinal issues regarding burial and mourning by looking at the rites in LSB.  Kantor Daniel Reuning will spend a plenary session discussing the theology and music of Luther’s funeral hymns and how they are meant to bring comfort to Christian mourners. During the daily services throughout the retreat we will sing many of the best and strongest Lutheran hymns for funerals including In Peace and Joy I Now Depart, Lord Thee I Love With All My Heart, and Behold a Host. Bring your tissues. There is going to be weeping aplenty as we praise God and confess the mighty hope given us in Holy Scripture that we will see our loved ones again in the Resurrection on the Last Day and that even now as Jesus lives so do they.

Dates:
Tuesday August 1 - Thursday August 3, 2017 at Redeemer Lutheran Church (click for map) in Ft. Wayne.
Cost: $35/adults, $25/12-18, $15/2-11, maximum cost per family: $165.

Worship: Matins, Holy Communion, Vespers
Worship will be central to our retreat. Holy communion will be offered every day. God will refresh and encourage, feed and nourish His people. We will use historic liturgies and ceremonies exclusively.

Work: Lectures, Sectionals, Workshops
Our work will be done in the main plenary sessions and in smaller sectionals. The plenary sessions will feature our own Rev. David Petersen and Rev. Dr. Daniel Reuning.

We will also bring you seasoned parents, pastors, and other specialists in our smaller sectionals. We will again have a mini-VBS for the elementary-aged kids during all plenary and sectional times, and will have sectionals geared toward, parents, teens, pastors, and those that are general interest.

Play: Plenty of time to visit and relax, a Talent Show, and a new activity
We will also play at the retreat. We will sing, eat, and visit together. Free time will be provided. We believe that music, food, and good company are gifts from God to be enjoyed, not apologized for, and need no sanctification. We will embrace them in their proper place, confident that these things are also good for God's people.

Schedule:
(Please feel free to bring snacks for your family to enjoy during the retreat, we know that everyone isn't hungry at the same times and some people need to eat more frequently. There will be free coffee and pitchers of water throughout the retreat and bottled water and pop available inexpensively for purchase.)

* * *
Males age 10-19 who desire to acolyte during the services at the retreat should attend this training presented by the members of Redeemer's Acolyte Corps. There will also be short coaching sessions before each service for those who serve. (If young men have access to a cassock & surplice that fits them, it would be helpful for them to bring that along. They should also plan to have dress pants and shoes for the service. Also, only those who have been admitted to the altar may serve as acolytes.)
