Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus)
Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus)
The Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus) is a long-billed shorebird that breeds in northern North America. Winter migration takes them to the southern US and as far south as Brazil. In winter plumage they are nearly identical to the Long-billed Dowitcher. On average Long-billed Dowitchers have longer bills, but overlapping variations in physical characteristics of the two species make identification difficult. In order to positively identify these species we need to consider other traits such as habitat, behavior and vocalizations. If the bird is foraging in salt water it is probably a Short-billed Dowitcher. Long-billed Dowitchers vocalize while feeding and Short-billed Dowitchers feed silently. Vocalization is the easiest and surest way to differentiate Dowitcher species in the field. The bird in this photo was completely silent in flight or while feeding, and was in salt water. This strongly suggests that it is a Short-billed Dowitcher. There are other characteristics to confirm identification such as differences in under wing and tail feather patterns. A photographed image can be a valuable aid to identification. August 3, 2012, Bunche Beach Preserve, Lee County, Fort Myers, Florida, USA.
