Our Mission Statement

Our goal for the Writing Center is to foster a community of writers on this campus.  Staffed by experienced students trained in reader response theory, the Writing Center peer tutors provide a supportive, collaborative learning environment through one-on-one consulting. (On-line consulting, launching Fall 2017).  The purpose of the center is not to offer last minute editing/proofreading in grammar and punctuation; rather, the focus is to help the students improve their problem-solving strategies and analytical thinking skills in preparation for college writing. Monthly workshops provide direct instruction on the writing process.

Specifically, the objectives of the Writing Center are:

  • To facilitate meaningful dialogue about writing and the writing process

  • To help students clarify thinking and build better arguments

  • To increase the ownership students take in their writing

  • To prepare students to write successfully in college

  • To foster a genuine enjoyment of writing

  • To engage students in reflective thinking about their writing
