NEXT GIG -Saturday 6th April - Albatros, Wells-Next-The-Sea

Rattlebox are a raucous folk band from Norfolk. We specialise in goodtime rowdy pub music, and can often been found playing at festivals and in pubs around Norfolk. We play a combination of our own songs, traditional songs and even a few contemporary tunes.

Rattlebox were formed in 2007 in the North Norfolk village of Corpusty. We were a group of friends who had a shared love of music, cider and rural life. One late night in The Earle Arms we were talking of past bands we had played in, and in a heady mixture of mid-life crises and alcohol we decided to form a band. And Rattlebox was born.

The name Rattlebox, came from our cider making activities. Norfolk Rattlebox is a rare, local variety of apple. There are only two known mature trees left. The apple has the name Rattlebox because when you shake a ripe one, the pips rattle inside the fruit.

We have gone through a few line up changes in the past few years and now we are a settled five-piece. We are Jo Kerkam (vocals, guitar, mandolin), Rob Moore (vocals, melodeon, melodica, bass, cajon), Jon Simpkin (vocals, ukelele, banjolele), Simon Waller (vocals, bass ukelele, coronet, cajon), Danny Cotgrove (vocals, guitar).

Late 2015 was a highlight for Rattlebox with the recording of our debut album. This and our later albums are is available at our gigs and through the website. Please contact kirstytimson@yahoo.co.uk, and you can pay via paypal. They are £10 inc p+p to UK. You can here a few of our songs on the songs page of this website.

In December 2015, we filmed a video to our song The Wells Whaler. Its in a black and white silent movie style and again, our thanks go to filmmakers Roland and Imogen Harris for creating the video. The video is on the songs and video page of this website.

Roland was back at it in the autumn of 2016, producing a video to our recording of Drink Up Your Cider. It features Rattlebox and friends at our annual cider making day.

2017 proved to be a momentous year for Rattlebox. We were given the opportunity to record at The Windmill Studio, which is owned and run by Ash Soan. We wanted to recreate our live sound and in true Rattlebox style, a barrel of beer was ordered in and we played live in the studio, and Ash recorded us, warts and all. The result is great and conjures up the atmosphere of our favorite environment. The pub.

We embarked on a European Tour July/August 2017. We played in England, France, Andorra and Spain. Have a look at the European Tour page on this website for details of the gigs. Our soundman/filmmaker Roland has made a great film (below) about the tour and late in 2017 he recorded another album for Rattlebox: a live recording of a performance in the bar of the former hold of the ‘Albatros’ – a 19th-century Dutch cargo ship at Wells-next-the-Sea, which is one of our favourite venues.

In 2018, amongst various gigs, we joined with other Norfolk musicians to record ‘This Train is Bound for Glory’ outside at Whitwell & Reepham Station. The recording and video featured on BBC Music Introducing in Norfolk’s on-line music festival, and you can find on our Songs and Videos page.
